OK...I apologize in advance if this sounds "political"...it's not meant to be. It's just that the political process controls taxation and spending...and taxes have such a large impact on our hobby. Billions of dollars in tax revenue is lost to tax-free internet sales every year. The revenue has to be made up somehow or we have to cut back on spending. I doubt politicians (in general) can survive without a constantly growing stream of money to spend (buy votes). That makes an internet sales tax inevitable (imho).
In my state every business is a tax collection agent, including sellers at flee markets and coin shows. We have a 2% internet usage tax (which most people here don't even know about) and in my county a 9.75% sales tax. What makes selling out of your home any different, be it from a knock on the door, phone call, or internet auction. We also do not have a state income tax, which is why I don't mind the high sales tax rate. I think they are looking at the issue wrong. If there is a tax, it should be applied to the state where the retailer is and not where the customer lives.
