Any kind soul out there who has a warm spot in their heart for Italian separatists AND delights in hammering out specific attributions for coins? :)

I am really just looking for a specific Krause # for this "coin." (Well, and any friendly repartee of course.)

    Weight: 10-11g
    Diameter: ~29mm
    Date: 1993
Obverse: Helmet before map of Nord.

    Thank you!

I think it's KM X#48, if silver plated, or KM X#48a, if gilt.

I can't really judge the color from the pictures.

They describe it as a "hat". Hat or helmet, it's a funny looking one of either, wouldn't you say?

Interesting. I had not heard of Nord before.

    Friendly repartee, huh?

So ... what's your opinion on bacon? :woot:

I smell bacon cooking right now. I work as a night auditor and front desk receptionist in a hotel. They just opened the restaurant for breakfast. Bacon fumes are drifting out. 'Tis quite torturous. I shall have to go and purloin some momentarily.

What's your stance on bacon theft? ;)

@Curtisimo - what did you do with that "LordM with Bacon" picture? I'll be durned if I can remember what thread that was in. LOL

Bacon theft is a generally accepted method of acquiring such an enormously valuable commodity. Of course, the understanding is that all risk is upon the absconder, because it's equally accepted that bacon in one's possession may be appropriately protected with whatever level of violence the current owner deems necessary.

Before 7:00 AM, I am "in charge" of the entire hotel because I'm really awesome the only employee in the joint besides the breakfast lady.

As "De Facto Manager on Duty", I am vested with the authority to perform periodic, unannounced "Bacon Quality Control Checks" (BQCC's) to ensure our guests are being served only the absolute finest quality bacon.

I always make sure to inform the breakfast lady that I am exercising this authority.

And she always makes sure to look duly impressed

Bacon? Bacon?!? There's bacon? It is my belief that BQCC's are are thoughtful and necessary to ensure that the tastes of the general public are not eroded due to subpar bacon. Keep the standards high! I myself have been a long-standing member of the NLB League. (No Limp Bacon League) Many a time have I initiated an intervention with some poor soul burdened with under-cooked, low quality bacon. The euphoric look on their tear-streaked faces when I presented them with properly cooked bacon was all the thanks I required.

    <ahem>

Northern Italian separatists and a gilt token with a hat on it --- what more could I desire? :)

KM X#48a? There is a 48a? Well, then that explains why I couldn't come up with it. There is no 48a in my 6th edition Krause. (And I haven't been bingeing on bacon, so I can't use that old excuse.) For my mental growth, where did you pull out the 48a? Or did I blindly miss it in my 6th edition?

Thank you Lord M. The pints are on me next time.

I just did some keyword searching on the NGC World Coin price guide, is all. It threw out several possibilities, and as I recall, only the 48 and 48a matched that date and denomination and had the "hat" on it. (Admittedly, I'm still having difficulty visualizing that thing on the map as a hat.)

Hmmm... I wonder how Krause numbers are assigned and then dealt out to NGC before they are published? Ah well. I appreciate the info.

The "hat" struck me as the garment worn under armor. Head, neck, and down on to the shoulders. <shrug>

Yessir. Yikes. Since my guess is that they don't have hundreds of people on staff creating those books, the thought of being the responsible party(s) juggling all of that data for thousands upon thousands of coins makes my entire intestinal tract clench up. Bless them for suffering the slings and arrows received for some of their more outrageous listings. It's all taken by me with a big grain o' salt in a big ballpark.

(Dang it! I'm still thinking about that bacon...)

Good point. Keeping that database up must be a herculean (and largely thankless) task. That being said, errors like the one I pointed out there are rather silly.

I groan (and chuckle) thinking that somewhere in the world someone is wearing down a AU coin's surface to make it VF "...'cause its more valuable!" :banghead:

Unfortunately, fifty percent of the population is below average intelligence...

However, statistics aside, when it comes to common sense... I fear the percentage is somewhat lower. Alas.

Common sense is an increasingly rare commodity. One that unfortunately cannot be taught
