I find that simply saying 'modern coinage' is a copout. Yell at me if you must, but there are designs that are nice and although you may like them as much as classic coins, they are not all dogs. Many of the statehood quarters were quite nice. Worst? As mentioned: SBA Obverse and the special olympics commem come to mind. A third one for me is the Wyoming state quarter. Yuck. Also, I did not like the reverse of the 2009 Native American (I love both the 2010 and 2011).
I just don't like the newer Jefferson nickel obverse...the one with the new profile of his face. They should have done much better with the presidential dollars too.
The obverse of the quarter from 1999 to 2009 gets my vote; they crammed so many words on it and Washington looked very cartoonish, in my opinion. Thankfully, the original 1932 image of Washington was restored, the coin looks much better.
Mooooo Without a doubt...Wisconsin State Quarter. Simply Gastly.https://picasaweb.google.com/Ripley44mag/AmericanStateQuarters#5457594128900529394
For me right now it's the Barber coins. I've tried rationalizing it because they're classic, but they are just too simple for my taste.
You guys might hate me but I hate this design, it's way too simplistic, it's almost like the government said "What do we put here..." "I don't know shield??"
Aw, c'mon. We should encourage more states not to take themselves so seriously. (The first time I saw the Wisconsin design, I really thought it was a Carr parody...)
I think the Ike is ugggly! Of the old designs, I'd pick the Shield Nickel as the dog that should have stayed on the porch. Bruce
