Have received the coin, and the patina looks nothing like on the seller's picture. Bought it mostly because of the incredible patina, well .... At least, I assume it's very natural ... still like it. What do you say?
You can assume it's natural all you want... your pictures show something different. In fact, your pictures reinforce my assertion that the "patina" is fake. Very, very strongly, I assure you.. whatever is on the surface of that coin was applied intentionally by someone trying to deceive you. It appears they were successful.
Thanks, Physics Fan, that is sad. So I have paid about 20% on top of the foreseen grade (I had graded it MS63) value for the coin to get a grey, not so beautiful surface which is AT, and is lower grade (now looks like AU58), too? Would you say the AT reduces the market value? How much? My guess: if it was NT and MS53, the price of $1500 would be fair. With grey AT and AU58 most would not pay more than $500, I feel ;-( And surely NGC or PCGS would grade it DETAILS ;-( Damn. Before I bought, I asked the seller for a discount, and he said "I will accept £1200 if this can be paid via bank transfer, with the understanding that the coin is sold as is, with no guarantees on any third party grading opinions/grades." So maybe he knew it is AT ;-( ;-( - double damn.
The seller is also on MA-Shops and VCoins, so I thought I can trust him. Would very much like to return it but fear this might be tough, also again going thru customs back into the UK.
Created a video to get your opinion. Would you pay over the value of the grade for this coin? I really would not like to. I do not want a coin with fake patina. https://youtube.com/shorts/YisAHj4Karo
You can upload videos to this site directly, as you do with pictures. Or, some of us upload the videos to youtube and then link them there.
Much better. I mean, my opinion doesn't change... a video is not necessary in this case. But a youtube video is much more user-friendly.
Maybe they've used blow torch or Bunsen burner? So here comes the question about impact of fake patina on value. Honestly guys, would you pay more than only for the grade for this coin or would you return it? I assume PCGS or NGC would grade it DETAILS, which massively decreases value. There is a shiny NGC-AU58 coin at 80% of the cost with no DETAILS.
Artificial toning is often applied to try to cover up problems such as scratches. The obverse looks like that might be the case.
Thanks everyone for your valuable comments. Have sent the coin back as it was far too expensive for its grade and having AT ...
