Biju, you will be pleased to know that I picked up a 1940 silver 1 Rupee at a numismatic meeting last Saturday for a bargain price of NZ$5.Had it been either the 1938 or the 1939 1 Rupee,it would have been even better.I have got a 1944 as well.I haven't yet got either the 1947 or the 1950 1 Rupee coins.

Biju,I wonder what KM numbers both the 'normal' & the mule Sri Narayandev commemorative have been assigned in the 21st Century Krause catalogue & what prices Krause have put on these 2 coins.

Thats a good find indeed Aidan!!.. The 1938 is rarely available now for about $25. But the 1939 coin is really rare. And there are lots of counterfeits.. A real one will cost around $500 to $900. I've noticed one such coin in the coming auction of Todywalla.

Aidan, the common coin worths around Rs.20/- here in UNC (approximately 1/2 dollar). And the mule coin is around Rs.500/- (approximately $11) now. Since the mintage of the mule is not yet known, I'm not too sure about its value in future.

Biju, once the numismatic community outside of India become aware of the mule coins that are coming out of the 4 Indian Government Mints, the prices for these will go in one direction - up through the roof into the stratosphere!

Did you see the Indian postal order thread in the Paper Money section?

Biju, once you get your Indian numismatic website up & running, hopefully that could change,as the postal order is the close cousin to the banknote.Perhaps you come across them in the course of your work when someone pays their taxes.

You can use the Indian Princely States postal order information on your Indian Princely States website.

We used to have postal notes & postal orders over here in New Zealand, but these were discontinued in 1986.Those that are extant are becoming increasingly sought after.I've found getting postal orders slightly easier to get than postal notes, but they're still too difficult to find.I last picked up one nearly 2 months ago.

Spock1k,lets hope that the Mohur is a proper coin,as opposed to being one of the Bombay Mint restrikes that seems to turn up a lot.

If i post it it will be the real thing but thanks for the warning. Unfortunately a couple of negotiations have not gone well. I am still on the hunt though and also on the horizon is a bombay mint produced gold sovereign in mint state condition :D

Aidan, I think you are asking about the first coin in the scan below.. Its actually issued to commemorate 2600th Birth day of Bhagawan Mahavir. Mahavir is the 10th and most important Theerthankara as per Jainism. Vardhaman Mahavir is known as the founder of Jainism.
The second coin is a 1996 5 Rupees coin commemorating 2nd International Crop Science Conference. The conference was cancelled but 11,000 coins were released already. Its very difficult to get this coin in BU. UNC coins can be found but the finishing is not that good.. I had to buy a souvenir set issued on the date of its release.. ;)

Biju, those are very nice small-sized 5 Rupee coins you have posted there. That Swastika is very clear. The latest commemorative coin I have got is a 1997 50 Paise commemorating 50 years of Indian Indpendence, which depicts Mahatma Gandhi leading a march.
