I collect coins and currency for the beauty and history behind the coin. Currently, I think the U.S. Government is doing a poor job on both of the counts I listed. Look at how well they did when they made a gold restrike of three one hundred year old coins that did have appealing subjects on the coins. Now look at what the mint is putting out. They made a commemorative coin for the Girl Scouts and they didn't even sell enough to make expenses. I believe it was the first time the organization, the Girl Scouts, did not get any money at all from the sales of the coins. Last years National Park $5 Gold Coin had the lowest mintage (approximately 4.000) of any commemorative gold coin made, even less than the uncirculated Jackie Robinson gold coin. I'm curious to see how the new $100 gold Liberty is going to sell. It will either bomb out with collectors or do well with speculators who assume it will have a low mintage. I writing this to explain why I buy Midnight Mint coins, I think they are putting out medals that collectors like. The designs are attractive and well designed and they are not priced out of the range of the average collector. Just yesterday I received in the mail the latest coin I ordered from the Midnight Mint and Daniel did not disappoint me:

This metal was made from a refurbished press from the Denver Mint and doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the latest presses the U.S. Mint has, yet I think it outdoes anything they've put out in the last few years.
