Many thanks for the references (and other comments). I found an article on Academmia.edu "A problematic group of Late Roman bronze coins from Dobruja". These coins include imitations of the fallen-horsman-type that we discussed earlier. Hence, this would confirm that the coins come from the Balkan region. Maybe these coins were minted in the Roman province of Thrace, which was under pressure from Goths at the time.
Victor listed some major references and his page about late Roman imitations: http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/barb2/ I have a page about reference works on ancient imitations: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/imit/imitationrefs.html It hasn't been updated in a decade, but was pretty comprehensive when it was written. Here is my favorite late Roman "barbarous" imitation. It is a large AE1. Valentinian, 364-375. 28 mm. 10.365 grams. This coin is a little bit heavier than the originals!
