I just realized that that this is already my fourth Gordian III coin despite me trying to own just one portrait of every emperor. Is that ability to crawl into a collection in substantial numbers why some of you call them "roaches"? Or does that only apply to his Ants? I like the sideburns and slight fluff of a mustache on this portrait of young Gordian. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG - Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / P M TR P V COS II P P S C - Gordian III, in military attire, advancing right, holding transverse spear and globe Sestertius, Rome 242 (10th emission of Gordian III) 30 mm / 20,7 gr RIC 307a, Cohen 267, Banti 75, Sear - Also it seems like a huge upgrade to my old Gordian bronze that I had picked up for 15 USD for the sake of it´s clean surface: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG - Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / IOVI STATORI S C - Jupiter standing facing, head right, holding sceptre in right hand, cradling thunderbolt in left arm Sestertius, Rome 241 30 mm / 17,82 gr RIC 305, Cohen 111, Banti 37, Hunter 134
Nice! One thing I love about well-preserved sestertii is they are big enough to show details like nascent facial hair on the young emperor. Upon returning and looking a second time, I like your upgrade even more. Oh, hey , look- it's not a sestertius, but I got a Gordie3 for my Secret Saturnalia gift.
That's a big improvement, well done!! RIC 267, issued 239-40 (aged 14 or 15). I can't see any facial hair on this one.
Yes, a nice upgrade Gordian III, Sestertius minted in Rome, AD 241/243 IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate and draped bust right, seen from behind IOVI STATORI, Jupiter standing, looking right, holding thuderbolt and sceptre. S C in field 20,18 gr Ref : Cohen #111, RCV # 8710, RIC # 298a Q
