Hmmm... I actually have about 8 coins that I have purchased since I posted my Top Coins for 2016. I THOUGHT that I was going to end on the Carthage EL Stater, but, too many fun ones popped up on my radar. My last coin of 2016 is a Roman Republic AR Denarius... I thought that I would share this one, as I really like the subject of the reverse: Roman Republic 42 BCE Moneyer: L Livineius Regulus (one of 4 Moneyers that year! A quattuorvirate) AR Denarius 3.7g, 19mm Obv: Bare head of the praetor L. Livineius Regulus right Rev: Gladiatorial scene; in foreground, one man attacks lion with spear; in back ground, second man with shield and sword attacks panther; on left, wounded boar; in exergue, L. REGVLVS Ref: Sear 489; Crawford 494/30; Syd. 1112 Comment: bankers mark and scratch on obverse. I love the gentle wear on the rough gladiatorial scene! Please POST ANY OF YOUR COOL REPUBLIC COINS!!!
Wonderful coin and desirable type! It's somewhere on my want list... or at least, I'm always tempted whenever I see one of them come up. Nothing like some gladiatorial games to close out the year!
I've seen the type, but I haven't found one I can afford. It's a great type with a scene we all know from Hollywood. One of these days I will find one, but until then I can enjoy seeing yours. Congrats. I thought I'd look through some of my RR coins and find one that I've rarely posted. Hope this one counts. MN. AUILLIUS ROMAN REPUBLIC; GENS AQUILLIA AR Denarius OBVERSE: VIRTVS III VIR ; Helmeted bust of Virtus right. REVERSE: MN AQVIL M N F MN N SICIL in ex.; The consul Man. Aquillius raising Sicilia Rome 71 BC 3.3g, 19mm RSC/Aquillia-2, SYD-798 This issue alludes to Beneficia conferred on Sicily by his grandfather Mn. Aquillius, consul in 101 BC, responsible for ending slave war.
Great coin, I need one of those also. The banker's marks make neat mutton chops for Regulus! I am way behind taking pics of coins. I do not think I have posted this one yet. Roman Republican Quinarius, Apulia, circa 211-210 BC. Anonymous, MT (in monogram) Obv - Helmeted head of Roma right, V behind Rev - Dioscuri on horseback riding right; MT ligate below horse on right, ROMA in linear frame below. Crawford 103/2a RSC 33h BMCRR Italy 228 Syd – 117 RBW - 464 1.85g, 17mm, 10h; Very Fine.
Awesome coin @rrdenarius! That is probably my favorite design for Republican Era coins. I hope to be able to pull the trigger on one for my own collection in 2017.
Nice coin to end 2016, Alegandron! A well detailed motif. What to do when so many nice coins come up all the time....!
Wow, Gandalf => man, that's an absolutely awesome "Gladiatorial scene" I'm totally jealous of that crazy coin!! (awesome) well, I've always thought that a few of these AR-RR babies were fairly cool ...
Hey Gandalf ... thanks for allowing me to pile-onto your cool thread (I needed a coin-release!!) ... ooow, I forgot to post all of my cool AE-RR examples!! (well, maybe I'll merely step-back and watch somebody else for a change, eh?) Cheers
Here is one I got in November... Cool Roman Republic... Roman Republic Province of Macedonia Thessalonika Mint Quaestor Aesillas (BC 90-70) AR Tetradrachm 28 mm x 16.50 grams Obverse: Flowing hair bust of Alexander the Great, Greek legend, MAKEDONWN (Macedonians) TH mint mark behind bust Reverse: Club of Hercules center, Coin Chest left field, Quaestor's chair right field. Surround be a wreath. Ref:BMC 81-83; Dewing 1224-1225
Sweet coin Alegandron! I have nothing like it, maybe if I ever move away from the Greek world I might
Well... I have FIBBED. I THOUGHT the above was the last coin. In fact, since I THOUGHT that my Carthage EL Stater would be my last coin for 2016, I have purchased 17 coins including my OP.
