The question is not which design is nicer or which you are attracted to. Or even which could you afford. The question is would you prefer collecting large cents, minted from 1793 to 1857, or FE's minted from 1856 to 1858. Lance.
I gotta say this is of the hardest of Lonegun's bracket polls...Ya know what, I love draped bust large cents, but I would not want to collect any other than that. My vote belongs to the flying eagle.
Maybe I should split large cents into 3 categories. If the large cent loses this battle and I split it up going forward, I would give each a loss. If I did that, I would split Lincolns into 2 groups (maybe 3).
I prefer the braided hair large cents for their design and also because I actually have a few: 1852, 1854, 1856(slanted 5). I find them more attractive than the FEs, which I have only one of, an 1857 that is AG at best. It's fairly easy to get a nice F-VF large cent for less than a low-grade FE cent. But when it comes down to it, since I'm sitting at the lower end of the price spectrum, those able to afford a MS FE or MS LC would probably find it hard to pick which one they'd prefer to collect because they'd both be jawdroppers.
Personally - any large cent type would beat FE in my book. But then again I have always wanted an 1856 FE - still large cent wins hands down.
Personally, I enjoy flying eagle cents because they are more readily available to me, but large cents are still pretty cool.
No Vote button - Anyway this is a tough call. I think the Flying Eagle is a much better design, but there are only the three years. I love the large cent coins just because they are a type obsoleted minted coin. Dave
The polls will start up again with some coins that have yet to see the heat of combat. Stay tuned. :smile
