Hello there! I have a total of four large cents in my collection. One 1835 that I purchased many years back, and 3 braided hair large cents I bought at the last coin show I attended. I have been trying to identify the Newcomb varieties, using the PCGS CoinFacts page and an online copy of Newcomb’s United States copper cents, 1816-1857. I have some of them narrowed down, and would like some input on whether or not people agree with my attributions. I will post two here, and two in another thread.

Here is one of the braided hair large cents:

    1842 1C, I believe Newcomb-7.

Next is yet another braided hair large cent:

1854 1C, I was having difficulty telling if it was N-16 or N-18, but I think N-16 is closer.

Thank you all, these are the two for this thread. I will make a “Part 2” thread so that there aren’t too many images on one page.

I appreciate any input anyone may have!

I believe you are correct on the 1842. The 1854 is a N-16, the 5 and 4 are spaced farther apart on the N-18
