Hi friends! Would someone who knows Lafayette Dollars well check this out for me? I'm thinking it might be a fake. The "A" in state looks off, but I've only seen pictures of them online. Thanks.
I've seen them, never had one. How does yours compare with this picture? Oh, never mind! I'm sure that it looks better than this Xed box! I used to know how to insert pics. Guess that the old brain lets me down again!
Need close-up of letters. Picture too small. So far looks C/F. Many of the fakes are crude but they are making sharply struck deceptive copies. Coin should not have a granular surface either.
The crossbar on the T in united looks angled in the pic. ?? It should be square with the leg. I think the lettering looks a little off, like the placement of the first E in Lafayette. I'm no counterfeit detective but I do have one of these I'm comparing and I'm very skeptical of this one.
I'm not a specialist, and the pictures don't show a lot of detail, but is sure looks like the Chinese fake commemorative halves I've seen.
OMG! I'm SOoooooooooo embarrassed. No need for photos. I just took a better look. This is such a badly made reproduction that I should be banned from CT for for a week for not noticing how crude and misshaped the letters are as posted by the other members. My Bad
Nope, it may take at least a week. On three occasions so far, I've "jumped" into a thread "half-cocked" and made stupid posts. Dah...can we see a close-up?
Thank you everyone for the input. Sorry for the potato quality pictures, I'll try to get some scans when I get home.
When you get home, go on the internet and Google images of your coin. You should spot the difference in the shape of the letters faster than it took me to type this.
No worries - I once got to the point where I had almost pushed "POST" on a thread about a Pine Tree Shilling....when I noticed the words "International Sterling Facsimile of Pine Tree Shilling" on it. So I changed the title to "The Magic of Reading."
Bet you were getting ready to BLAST me into submission. Now you made me check my files...Yes, five reverses, four obverses.
I don't like the look of the rims or the edge reeding, but withhold judgement until we have better closeups.
