Just yesterday I read an article about some 9th grade girls who conducted an experiment concerning WIFI radiation and its effect on seed growth, in which they demonstrated that the seeds exposed to WIFI radiation did not grow while the others flourished. Scientists all over the world were amazed and now plan to do additional studies to back up the group's findings.

If we leave the pursuit of knowledge solely to the "experts" we are in a lot of trouble indeed. Sometimes they are so busy looking at the trees that they miss the forest, so to speak. We need people to look at trees, but not only people to look at trees.

I've always had a problem with so-called technocrats, which I differentiate from scholars who dedicate their lives to pursuing a subject they are passionate about (the field of education is full of both). People who are truly passionate about a subject aren't going to look down on the contributions of another person in that field based on credentials.

All that being said, I would be thrilled if Doug wrote an article for Koinon!

I was a little delirious from looking at coins all day when I wrote my message late last night. I just looked at it now and it looks a little funky grammar wise, so sorry.

Honestly what I was trying to say is that I really like talking to people who are friendly and can sense that another person (collector, scholar, whatever) is seriously interested in learning more and are willing to help guide them in the right direction. Those kind of people tend to write the kind of articles that I would like to see more of in general. Too often I feel that there are only two areas for ancient collectors: 1) great forums like this and CU and friendly clubs like my own where people try to start in a place that everyone is comfortable with and push just far enough so that most people learn new things without getting shoved into the deep end of discussions about die varieties and stuff that you can't possibly care about when you are still trying to understand the basics; 2) the deep end where people who are specialists just dig deep into their niche and put out articles about very specific minutiae which has much value to the other folks trying to figure that stuff out but leaves the general collecting public a little too far behind.

Give me a coin, then a little general history about the Emperor, then maybe show me some stuff about how that Emperor affected coinage of his reign (here is where I am not sure even where to look to find that information in many cases) then get deeper into the coin and what not. I think everyone, serious scholar and full on amateur can walk away from a group of articles like that having enjoyed themselves and also adding to their knowledge base.

From a business standpoint, I would circulate some articles here to see what kind of interest there is and maybe crowd fund the whole printing project throughout the year for the annual compendium so you aren't buried in both administrative details and costs. People could make suggested donations of a dollar or two per article. It also is a good indicator of what kind of stuff your potential audience is reading and willing to pay for.

    :beaver:

I missed it ... did you already post your latest article?

Oh sorry, I just re-read back ... it's still in its infancy

Yah, I probably won't read it, but it sounds like a few of these coin-dudes are already on-board!!

I find it amazing that any of you can read this site and other sites and then still have enough coin-energy to ponder writing about coins!!

    Wow, you dudes are super-coin-hard-core!!

Man, I find it hard enough to try and read all of your cool new posts on "this" site ... yah, I still have to work and keep my "family" happy, so I only have so much coin-time on my hands ...

So although your assignment sounds awesome, sadly I doubt that I'll be adding any of my "coin-gems" to your work

=> but I love your goal and it sounds like you have energy in the tank => so I wish you all the luck in the world, my coin-friend

    Bump.

Seriously though, this is such a good idea that shouldn't be on page 6. Hats off to Nicholas, hope Koinon pulls through!
