I have been chasing an example of this particular classic Greek coin for a while. I won this coin at an auction recently. It showed up in the mail today. It was mis-attributed by the seller. I think I've got the attribution right. Philip II was the father of Alexander the Great. His silver tetradrachms are one of the classic and avidly collected issues of the ancient world. The obverse of this series features a bearded head of the god Zeus throughout, there are two significant variations on the reverse. The King rider reverse, which is thought to be a depiction of Philip II himself, and the youth rider holding a long palm branch. This particular coin displays the youth rider reverse. It is a posthumous issue. In any event post your Kings of Macedon coins! Kings of Macedon, Philip II; ca. BC 320-317 AR Tetradrachm, Amphipolis Mint, 25mm/14.1g Struck under Antipater or Polyperchon (for Philip III and Alexander IV), OBV: Laureate Head of Zeus Right REV: FILIP-POU youth rider, holding palm on horseback right, monogram beneath horse, monogram Lambda to right under raised foreleg. Terrific coin RB!!!! While I no longer have any of Philip, I was able to snatch a AE-16 bronze of Alexander the Great, with the bow/quiver/club reverse...minted in Macedonia..and I'm trying to grab a drachm as well.
I totally agree => that coin rocks!! Fantastic eye-appeal (sweet colour) ... oh, and at times I actually think that test-cuts add a bit of ummpphhh to a coin (and this is one of those ummpphhh-moments, my friend) ... congrats on a very cool addition, Bannon (full points!!) ... and yes, I do have an example to add into your rockin' thread ... => man, I love this coin (always have ... one of my all-time favs) The steroid horse and the sweet "club" really make this baby look kinda tough!!
RB, that's a very attractive coin! Great eye appeal even with the test cut. Congrats on a fine purchase KINGS OF MACEDON, Philip II. 356-36 BCE AR tetradrachm. 24mm, 14.20 gm, 12h Lifetime issue of Pella, 342-336 BCE Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right Rev: ΦIΛIΠ-ΠOY, youth, holding palm and reins, on horseback right, thunderbolt below, N in exergue Ref: Le Rider 222-306. cool new greek AR RB! i'm totally cool with the test cut, doesn't detract at all in my opinion. here's a coin of philip iii, so minted pretty much the same time as your coin.
Lovely coin, Race - and I love that it has some very light deposits/toning. I realize ancient silver has to be cleaned, but I prefer the look of your coin to shiny-white coins. This gives me an opportunity to re-post my recently finished set of bronzes in all four orientations...
Love the Tet Chris..... and JA's bronze set is fantastic...All donations of the same would be graciously accepted Seriously, all are wonderful examples that i would happily add to my holdings...
Sure, I'll just put them in the mail to you, lol. It took me two years to find the left/left version.
TIF's coin is indeed a wonderful example - and even nicer in-hand. I'd have kept it but was willing to give it to a very good home Here's its successor in my collection:
...and I am very happy you upgraded, allowing me to buy your spare ! I've taken hundreds of pictures of this coin but still haven't managed to accurately capture the in-hand look. The picture posted is a bit darker than in real life but it was closest. The images you took are better but I wanted to use my own-- although I did preserve the reflection template background.
Your images are still wonderful TIF. I know many here have expressed their opinions of the reflection template, so I guess I should too. I think it adds an interesting component to the image and I would use it if I had any idea of what I was doing with photography or image software.
