Slabs are not 100% airtight. They can have variations in the seal, variations in the shells, the plastic isn't hermetic, etc . if sealed properly, slabs will greatly reduce the exposure to moisture and atmospheric contaminants, but improper long term storage could give you problems. Don't forget, one of the methods for artificially toning coins in the slab is to pull a vacuum and then introduce H2S or other reactive gas under pressure. This wouldn't work if slabs were hermetic.
