Which makes the end result pure fantasy. The image is powerful and reminds me of the Public Service Announcmeents about polution in the early 1970's with the Indian in it.

I love the portrait on the buffalo nickel, dont care if its a real indian or 3 real indians, or pure fantasy...its a great portrait and my favorite US coin.

I am looking forward to the presidential series of dollars as well, lot of people are. Its the first time in a long time that I have cared about a new US coin in a long time.

At least the models for the nickle were true Native Americans!

Snopes is, of course, the premier "debunking" site on the internet. ;)

I WOULD like to see us do what some other nations do and start putting other type of people on our coins and bills...like great american inventors, scientists, writers, etc...that would be cool to have some series of coins and bills like these...

but if you want something, I will say that a petition might work...a group I am a member of petitioned the government for years to put Audie Murphy on a stamp, he comes from the same small east texas town as I do:

    so they do listen sometimes.

I think that anyone who wants to collect "Walking Liberty", "Standing Liberty", "Seated Liberty", "Liberty Facing Left", "Liberty Facing Right", "Statue of Liberty", etc...etc..., and "Eagle with Wings Spread, facing Left", "Eagle with Wings Folded, Facing Right"...(well, you get the idea), has every oportunity to do so.

The fact is, that many American coin collectors (like myself), actually like today's coin designs.
It's also a fact, that it doesn't matter what we want.

The dead president and portraits has been disliked overwhelmingly by the public for decades. There are multiple surveys attesting to that, and in addition there is the emense popularity of old designs. The Buffalo Nickel has now been repeated on 3 coins, all of which have been very popular. The problem with this is that the current general designs of US coins is straight jacketing the creative process in ways that other designs never had to put up with.

Even popular designs need change for asthetic purposes over time and after 70 years, time is UP.

And implying that the St Guald, Walking Liberty, and Peace Dollar Eagles are mundane, you must LOVE classical art which is Nudes sitting, Nudes standing, Nudes dancing ....

Petitions have little impact unless accompied by letter writing, visits to Washington and massive numbers of signatures.

Meanwhile, CNN on the Obit said he was half Cree and half Cherokee. Remember that the next time you read something in the Times.

A petition and some letter writing worked to get Audie Murphy on the stamp...

and those colored coins are horrid IMO...I hope to god we NEVER start minting those ugly things...just my opinion...

change coin design principles to make better coins with new materials which are mostly clads and alloys is A GOOD THING(TM).

Modern methods are ignord only at the Peril of the nations coin supply.
this is not 1850 any longer. The Mint has always taken advantage of technological improvements. I see no reason for this to change accept that the old designs need to get out of the way first.

I like the coins of old..the buffalo nickel, the liberty head cents, and even the ones we have now...I dont see how we will be in peril if we dont color our coins...I just wish we could go back to using silver...and not just silver colored alloys.

I am not opposed to new designs at all though...

I think the US should do a series honoring great american scientists, writers, inventors, and maybe put a coin in circulation with MLK on it :)

Or do a retro series, not copying old designs but in the spirit of american coins of old...but thats just my opinion.
