Key Date Value Destroyed

I have the 1965 edition and maybe the 1963. I'll have to check but the point I was trying to make is that the premiums were much lower than universally accepted "key" dates. As an example, the 31-S cent is listed for $85 in "UNC" in the 1965 edition which was a lot of money for the typical person at the time, as in about one week's pay. This coin is certainly known to be common today and was obviously more common 50+ years ago. There was a perception of scarcity which didn't actually exist.

In the 1980's, I did read accounts of hoarding for the 55 quarters and halves because of the relatively low mintage but wasn't aware of the others. I don't consider these "key" dates today and to my knowledge, others don't either. This though the premiums appear to be inconsistent with the actual scarcity since many (maybe most) collectors are unaware of this prior hoarding and incorrectly use the mintage.
