Key date 1877 Indian head penny in rough shape.

Well I dug this Indian while metal detecting today and unfortunately I gauged it with my digger. I haven't done that in years so I was pretty upset. Come to find out the 1877 is a key date which made things worse. It was in pretty rough shape coming out of the ground anyway but still frustrating. I don't metal detect to get rich and I still love adding this coin to my collection. It was actually my first Indian and my oldest coin to date. Any thoughts on if there is any value left in this coin?[IMG][IMG]

Looks like you got that one a couple times with the Shovel.

The true value is the story and find. However retail value would of been diminished since what mother has already done while under ground.
She would of only details grade to begin with...that said cool find, great story, and find a softer trowel in case lady luck smiles again.

Great find! If mine it would be a hole filler since it is the only date missing in my IHC collection. And welcome to Coin Talk, Ben!

Agreed, I would be ecstatic if I found a 77 IHC

Very well said. It was very rough to begin with being a dug coin. I am still very happy to add it to my collection.
It is a welcomed edition to my collection still for sure. Thanks.
I was pumped to find my first IHP and even happier when I realized it was a key date.
Yeah that's the worst I have ever hit one go figure[emoji23][emoji17] I found a wheat penny in the same hole and that was right in the center of the plug I cut. So I had that target pin pointed accurately and both coins give nearly the same signal on my detector. I was unaware that there was actually two coins in that target area so I hit the Indian cutting the plug around the wheaty. I really wish the coins would have been positioned opposite lol.

Well I did it again! I dug another 1877 IHP! This time I did not gauge it with my digger and it is much less worn as well. What do you guys think of this one?

The odds of digging not one but two 1877s.

I'd be playing Lotto if I were you. Lightening struck twice and you survived.

    Nice find(s).

If you keep finding this date you'll make it a common date.

Wow that probably got your heart going!

    Lol thanks!

    Haha I don't think that will happen but I won't be mad if I find a 3rd 1877! Lol

Ow, ow, ow. That is heartbreaking. Yet still an amazing find.

I've had some unfortunate tool mishaps while metal detecting myself, but fortunately on more common coins.

(Found that Canadian large cent in North Carolina.)

PS- I just saw your second 1877, and all I can say is... WOW!

In answer to your original question, the first (damaged) one you dug still has some value. How much is difficult to say, but it's still a key date coin.
