My local dealer offered me 4 times face-value for all the silver. What do you think of his offer?

I wouldn't unless they grade AU-55 or higher. Consider that over 500 million clad examples were minted.

I've run across literally hundreds of them (maybe thousands) while searcing rolls. I've kept a total of 3 coins. Most of the ones I've gotten have seen ample circulation and will probably never be worth more than 50 cents. I know it is tempting, but I'd concentrate on finding and the keeping rarer issues of the Kennedy series.

That's what mine gives for Silver Kennedys. I'd take it if you don't want to save the Kennedys for a collection.

I found 2 full rolls of BU bicentennial halves the last time I went to the bank... still stamped 7/17/1975, too! That was pretty cool!

I wasn't sure if he was referring to just the 90% silver 64's or everything from 64 through 70. It seems like the 64's ought to be worth more.

I assure you he was only talking about the '64s - the 40% silver coins would not have $2 worth of silver in them.

Four times face is the normal offer - the silver content is only worth 5 times face. The extra 50 cents is the dealer's profit margin.

Perhaps. But I would consider four times face a low buy price. Doubt such a dealer would sell at retail for five times face. So, at a buy of four times it may be more accurate to say fifty cents is "part" of the dealer's profit margin.

Today, Apmex quotes a buy price of $4.61 and a sell price of $5.11 for small dollar face amounts of 90%. That is 50 cents, but for a high volume national dealer. [40%: buy $1.77, sell $2.22]

    I'm holding mine.

That's why it's only 50 cents Willie - they are a high volume, national dealer. Smaller dealers sell to folks like them and thus typically pay less.

I opened 50 rolls tonight and found some interesting coins- not much silver but.....

    1- 1952-D Franklin
    1- 1966
    4- 1967s
    1- 2002-S proof

    Plus:

Another gold plated Kennedy, the 2nd one in 2 weeks for those of you familiar with my posts in another thread. This one is a Bicentennial in probably EF-45 condition.

And the most unusual coin out of them all. This one is clearly an error. The reverse is pretty normal, kind of a weak strike, but the obverse looks like it was struck "deep." The rim/edge is unusually high, and the date is unreadable. It has a D mintmark. LIBERTY can be made out barely. When looked at from its edge it looks like it is the normal thickness of a typical Kennedy half. I'll post a picture if anyone is interested.

Back to the bank on Thursday.....

Nice finds! Especially the Franklin. Gold plated coins are from the same year or not? Who would do this?

TOLS - You seem to find a lot more Walkers and Franklins than I normally come across. I wonder where your bank draws it's coins from? Locally or from the Fed? Have you ever asked them?

I actually work at my bank ;) So I guess that I have an unfair advantage. But we get our halves shipped in directly from the Fed. I have found some great stuff in boxes, but, ironically, most of my best finds (walkers and proofs) come from circulation. Its amazing what people bring for us to run through the change machine! So anytime someone brings in coin I quickly run to the machine and grab out all the goodies and replace them with ordinary pocket change.

Yeah, I like finding Franklins too, hands down more than anything else. This one was actually on the end of the roll, and I saw it almost immediately. It is cool when that happens. You want to show someone, but spilling the beans inside the bank probably isn't a good idea.

The gold plated Kennedies and their differences are interesting oddities that sparked a debate in another thread a couple of weeks ago. I've found 3 so far, a 1971 with the dates 1960/1985 stamped into it (got that +/- 2 weeks ago), a plain 1983 (maybe 8 months ago), and now a plain 1976. I also found a polished 1984 with the dates 1960/1980 stamped into it. Another poster in this forum claimed that the stamped gold halves represent a commemoration of the Kennedy inauguration, the 20th anniversary, the 25th anniversary, and so on. Maybe that is part of it. Another poster provided this link: CLICK HERE

Still, finding just a plain old gold plated Kennedy raises additional questions.

I haven't found too much other information of value. Members of this forum have been helpful and generous in provding what data they have, there just doesn't seem to be a lot out there. Still, it is cool to find gold when searching a bank roll. Maybe one day I'll get a Liberty DE mixed in with Kennedies.....

Outstanding finds. Keep it up. In three months of searching you have exceeded the totals I put together in six months.

I was sorting my returns tonight and ran across a 1987-D in about AU-55 condition. I almost let that one get away!

I finally gave up on finding one and went out and bought one this week. You're lucky.
