$30 is a pretty small number of halves to tell much about, so it could be that they ordered a box and got all 2000-Ds, in which case they'll have $470 more of them, or they could have given many out already... you just have to keep trying. Actually after searching around $30,000 worth on average the most frequent dates I get are 1971 and 1976, with not many 2000-Ds.

If you go back and read this thread over (an impressive feat should you acomplish it;) ), you will see posts time and again saying that quatity is the key to success in this endeavor. Personally, I search 6 boxes, or 6 thousand coins, per week. Out of six boxes it is not uncommon for 3 or 4 to contain no silver at all. Generally speaking, the boxes are hit or miss. So the more you search, the better your chances of finding rolls of silver. Hope this helped, and best of luck!

Wow- that's amazingly stubborn on the tellers' part. I can't remember if it was on this board, but if the casinos are that close, I read somewhere that someone was looking for 40% halves (and whatever else) by putting say $20 in a half dollar slot machine and then immediately cashing out, and repeating, repeating, etc... might be something to consider.

If they found any 40% silver halfs at all the value of them would just be for bullion melt.
Most casinos have phased out the coins and now use a token type piece.
Slot machines mutilate and chew up half dollars. They are the poorest looking pathetic scrap I have ever seen. It is far better to search rolls as the odds of finding decent condition specimens is more favorable.
Besides I can't take the smell and noise in the casinos. You have to be a football tackle to get through the crowd.

I got one response, asking what I would want for 4 of my best 2000Ds and I replied, but it obviously didn't go through. I'd like to send you some in exchange for something cool.

How to order half dollar boxes without a hassle

I heard a trick today on how to getting those half dollar boxes ordered......

They say that flattery goes a long way. If the teller does no worse than spit on you for asking, he/she gets a nice letter about them sent to the manager. Amazingly, the tellers instantly turn into happy-to-see-you people.

I haven't gone this far yet. Does anyone else have any stealthy tricks to share?

    Incredible Finds

I went to the bank today and got $290 in halves- 16 rolls with someone's initials on them (JR) and 13 rolls without. Of course the "JR" rolls were full of nothing but in the other 13 I found:

    1987-P and D
    11 Proof Halves
    10 *Silver* Proofs- 1992,93,94,96,98,99,00,01,02,03
    2 1952 Franklins
    33 1964 Kennedys
    80 1965-69 Kennedys

As well as many BU halves. Quite obviously someone's collection that got cashed in, I'm just glad it was me and not "JR" that found it!

As an aside, does anyone know if the silver proof halves were sold individually without packaging, or did someone take the time to bust them out of holders and redeem them for 50 cents?!

nope, they were only sold in the silver proof/premier/prestige sets. It sounds as if you are the recipient of a stolen collection! I hope the guy had insurance!

OMG - I would be in heaven. I'm trying to put together a complete set of kennedy halves, including proofs, that I pull from circulation. I've found a dozen or so proofs, but only one silver proof. That was a heck of a find!! Congrats!

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind too, although I wouldn't put it past some people to do the same to an inherited collection that they had no interest in.

You are very inspiring! Or, if not you, at least the rolls you found.:)

Sometimes, initialed rolls might really pay off. I got $120 from the bank last week, and two of them had a name written on the side. Those two had a couple of clads; the rest had no silver (though I did find some recent coins in very nice shape to add to my album).

A couple months ago, I got a two rolls from a teller. One roll had the word "clad" written on it. Sure enough, it had $9.50 in silver-clad coins (it was short one coin. I didn't complain at all.)

Thanks! And the inspirational tales keep coming- went to 6 banks today, 4 with nothing, but at the 5th one I got 3 solid 90% rolls of Franklins and Walking Liberties, and at the last one there were 4 solid 40% rolls with a few 1964 's mixed in...

As an aside, I seem to be having the most luck at non-chain banks in smaller towns, where I can buy all the halves they have on hand (so far they've all let me do that).

    Cleaning Half Dollars

I've had a lot of luck roll searching. However, I do have a few 1964's that are really ugly - some even have what looks like rust.

Is there a way to gently clean them? Someone recommended Nick-A-Lene cleaner. Is anyone familiar with this cleaner? Also, for the non-rusty ones, I've heard that boiling the coins takes the grime away. Is this true, or ridiculous?

    Thanks!

There are different methods I've read about to clean silver. There is a method that calls for boiling with tin foil (and baking soda, maybe) but I've only tried it on war nickels (35% silver) for mediocre results. Personally, I just use baking soda and water to get off the worst grime, but it doesn't leave them polished, just free of tarnish.
