It makes sense to me. This thread is now 660+ posts long and it you take some time to read back through it you will have some great advice for which coins to keep, how to acquire rolls, how to return rolls, and you will read of some of our (the regular searchers) great finds. Have some fun and learn something too!

    9 more rolls today

Cashed in 180 reject half dollars and got 9 more rolls. No silver. The winner is a 1991P in "good" cond.
Ever since this endless search began, the 1991P has evaded me. Plugged that hole in my Dansco.
Honorable mention goes to a 1987P. Poor guy is severely nicked up by what looks like obvious slot machine damage. Nevertheless it plugged a hole in my Whitman.

Ok, today I went to the bank. I exchanged $30 for 3-$10 Half Dollar Rolls. All I got was 2000D's. 60 of them. The lady at the counter told me she looked for some rolls with older half-dollars, but I guess she couldn't find any.
Do I go to a different bank?

I would! I've gotten entire boxes ($500 worth) of halves that were 2000D's,so it is likely that returning there would only result in more of the same. I'd try other places. If you are going to work in small increments (instead of by the box) then you will do some bank hopping by necessity so get used to it and cultivate relationships with as many different banks as you can. Good luck!

    Hi Chris,
This year so far I have been through about 200 rolls far less than you , but it seems that all the circulated Kennedys I find from the year's 1971,72,and 73 just have a much sharper strike and are in better condition.
While the ones from the 1980's and 90's look like they are all road kill, did they change the dies after the year 1973 or did maybe people just hold on to them longer befor letting them go ?

Actually 666 is the Devil"s number. And the Devil says you have your choice of 3 cars.

    silver

Does anybody know off hand what I could sell 90% silver halves for at $12.00 per ounce. Thanks

Well Bullion value is just alittle over $4....but most dealers aren't going to be paying that yet.
I have found that silver needs to be around the price for a few days before dealers start to buy at that price....so you might get $3.25-$3.75 each.

I've been to 3 banks. 2 don't have Kennedy Halfs at all and 1 had only rolls of 2000D's. Are they hiding them from me?

nope, they just don't have them. Unless you have a very cooperative bank that will order a box for you and let you get a few rolls at a time (or the funds to order by the box) then you are at the mercy of the bank patrons in your area wo may or may not return any halves to the banks. Generally, banks won't order halves unless a customer requests them and the only other way that they could get them is if they have people bringing them in.

But if they order some, then they will be all new right? So I basically have to wait until lots of customers return their old half dollars and the bank puts them in the rolls I get.

The master hubs were newer in the early 70's and so they had better detail to transfer to the dies, but by the mid eighties the hubs were wearing out and by 1990 they were atrocious! It is pretty interesting to watch the steady deterioration of the detail and relief on halves through the eighties, but there is no such thing as a 1990 Kennedy with good details because none of the dies had good details. Another factor is the sheer volume of early 70's Kennedy's produced, which adds to the odds that there are still nice coins out there. The last factor is that there are tons of 80's and 90's halves that were placed in circulation in casinos, so they lok horrible, but for some reason that didn't happen as much in the early seventies.

Not necessarilly, boxes from the FED (the Federal Reserve) are pretty randon and they are made up of returns that have been sent to them by hundreds of banks, so they do the collecting for you and then you get the rolled results. Remember that new ones are some of the best ones to pull (2002-2006) since they have tiny mintages and were not released for circulation.

But the 2000D's aren't worth keeping in good condition, right?

I don't think so, I spend them or return them in bulk as a deposit into my bank account. Do you own a copy of Yeoman's "Official Guide Book of US Coins" (commonly called the "Redbook")? If not I recommend getting a copy since it can be had for around $10-$15 and it has great info on mintages and other things that will help you. I know that I wear out my paperback version every year.
