I'm pretty jealous of you guys, if I find a couple rolls, like 1 or 2, it's like I've struck gold. I tried to order $500 worth of half dollars from my teller today, and you would of thought that I was asking her to solve world hunger!!

I guess I'll move away from the area. Got any apartments nearby to those banks? LOL

Were you talking to the person in charge of ordering coins (vault teller, I think they're called)? Because I think there's only one or maybe two people at the bank that can order- I would talk to them if you haven't. They might say they can only order larger quantities- $1,000 to $2,000 minimum- and if you can't temporarily have that much tied up in halves you can ask to buy them a little at a time.

If that fails you can ask to speak to the manager about ordering coins. They might say that it costs them money (maybe 10 cents a roll someone mentioned earlier in this thread) and at that point I'm not sure it's worth that much to search a box (my average yield is about 0.5% silver, i.e. 5 halves in a $500 box, which is about as much as it would cost to just buy 5 40% silver halves...) but if it's possible to close your accounts there (unless you have a mortgage with them...) that's something you can threaten too.

    Good luck!

I was just talking to the teller, so I'll try to talk to the head person. Closing my accounts is definatly a possibility. I won't have a problem getting the $2000 or so, but when I was talking to the teller, she told me that the place that they order the coins from might not even have $500 worth of them.

Got 500 dollars worth of halved today at the bank. Searched 400 dollars worth. NO SILVER, no nothing worth keeping. I have a feeling they were searched before. Not positive. I dropped them off at a differnet bank cause a few had black xs on them. Dont remember if I did that. Im out of paper rollers so Im going to get more tomorrow and order halves from a different banl.

    Search Results

I went through a $500 box and found:

    1945 Walker (1)
    1964 (2)
    1967 (3)
    1968-D (1)
    1967-D (1)
    1974-D (7) will check for DDO's
    1987-D (1)
    1999 (13)
    2001 (2)
    2004 (1)

    Not bad! :thumb:

    PROBLEM:
I re-deposited the balance into my account at anothe branch (#2) and tried ordering another box from #2.
WHY ARE SOME TELLERS SO IRRITABLE ABOUT ORDERING THESE AND GETTING THEM FOR DEPOSIT??? Branch #1 was great. Branch 2 was nasty. What is it about boxes of coins that turns tellers against you? I returned the balance neatly rolled in a box. I'm also trying to find out if they use the same ordering center. They said my order didn't come in today and that maybe it will come in next week and maybe it won't.

I went to the bank and got $20 in loose halves. Found a 1962, 67, a gold plated franklin, and a proof 1986 liberty half dollar! I thought that one was pretty cool. I also found some really weird half dollars, you just have to take a look at them.

Anybody have an idea of what it is?

    Today's Kennedy finds

I have not been posting my finds lately because it has just been one or two 40 percent coins each trip. Some trips to the bank resulted in just mutilated casino coins only.
But today I happened to be in the small town where the Silver Witch would only give me 2 rolls a few weeks ago. For months I have just had a feeling about that bank. I side stepped the small branch last week and went to their main city bank. 10 rolls of nothing.
Then my girlfriend's sister who has an account where the silver witch works got me an allotted 2 rolls but nothing turned up.
Today I gathered my courage and marched in.
The Silver Witch wasn't there. No customers were either.
I asked for half dollar rolls, the teller said how many? I said as many as you can give me. She said how about a tray of 10 for $100. Fine I replied.
Then it came... Are you a customer here? No. Well I'll ask the manager. She dialed the phone.
At that point I could stand it no longer. I blurted out: "What's the big deal, nobody wants them. Aren't banks supposed to serve the public?" The manager must have heard that because the teller hung up and said 10 rolls are ok. Honestly, they act like I'm trying to buy a narcotic without a prescription.
    So home with 10 rolls. Found a 1964, three 1966, two 1967 and a 1968D. Also strangely, a 2003D,
several BU 1977 coins were interspersed in many rolls. Found a 1988D in great shape and a beautiful spotless 1979. Some impeccable 1976 Bicentennials too. Found some other choice BU coins in hard to find years (in CT) and filled a few holes in my new Dansco for sure.
Now these were crimped end rolls, not hand rolled. The 1977 coins were thick with sharp edges and nicely gold toned.
These rolls must have been sitting in the vault for years. Now how do I get more?
I have to remember the Silver Witch is off on Mondays. :D

rotfl! Victor, I recommend opening an account there. Usually they will have one that costs you nothing and then you can write your first check (in the amount of your opening deposit) back to your self for deposit into your own account elsewhere. This should make it a little smoother.

P.S. just finished a box and it had 2 67's and an 89-S. A few other non-silver keepers, too; including a BU 86P!

sometimes...if you know what you are looking for. My best "pulled from a roll half dollar" is worth about 150 times what I paid for it.

    halves

Some of them MAY be worth more than a half dollar. Some of these guys go through boat loads of halves searching, but then again you could search one roll and get lucky.

So I buy a roll, take it home, sort it, and return what I don't want to the bank?

    returns

you can return them if you find a bank that does'nt charge to count change, otherwise you may spend more than you find. Myself, I spend the ones I don't keep. I can't search as many that way but its fun to spend them, you get all sorts of comments and strange looks.

Wow, I'm making a visit to my bank today and getting as many half dollars as I can.
While I'm here, are there any other coins that are worth going to the bank for.
I constantly go to the bank to trade in my dollar bills for Susan B. Anthony Dollars and Sacagawea Golden Dollars. Does this make sense?
