What about Walkers?? Do you ever find them in circulation? I was surprised to find ONE this week.

I just went through the last 11 rolls my bank had and found

    4-1964-D's
    1-1966
    1-1967
    1-1969-D

    1-1960 Franklin
    1-1961-D Franklin

    and 1 Proof 1976 bicentenial

    Not bad for 11 rolls.

I visited seven banks today asking for half dollars. Most banks only had a couple. One had a very dirty 1964 half. One bank gave me two Ike dollars. On the last bank I found the ultimate silver hoard. The teller was SO glad to hand me 15 rolls. She didn't know what she lost.
4 of the rolls were pretty much loaded. Total count:
    1964 - 7
    1964D-2
    1966 - 3
    1967 - 7
    1968 - 20
    1969 - 2

    1943 Walker
    1958 Franklin
    1962 Franklin

So I got about two full rolls of silver coins today. Probably the single most dramatic event in my coin collecting career. I'm still recovering.

No, there is a difference, i was just trying to be funny. The brilliant (normal) proof has deep reflective mirrored fields and frosty devices while the matte finish proofs are nowhere near as brilliant. They don't have the same deep reflectivity but they still exhibit all the other features of proof coins.

I've found just 2 Walkers in the last 11 months. At the end of September/first of October I plan to post a list of all of my finds for the past year so you guys can tell me how you think I did.

The funny thing was the teller was so happy to get rid of those rolls. She's like "finally got those off my hands". She missed out on a full roll of '68D's.

Once proofs have been in circulation for a while, it's hard to tell if they are matte finish or if they have deep reflective mirror backgrounds...Hey wait a minute, I may be on to something here. :)

So after you get done searching the rolls do you just take them back to the same bank? Don't the bank people get irritated?

All my banks have coin counting machines right behind the tellers. It takes very little time for them to count 300 dollars in coins and give me another 300 dollars worth. If my bank got irritated, I'd find a different bank. I figure they work for me not the other way around.

    Moen,
I don't mean to sound rude, but I disagee. A polshed reflective proof, to some degree, will keep it's reflective surface. Maybe after several years of heavy circulation it looses its mirror like appeareance. But from my experience with proof halves found in circulation, well circulated proof halves still show a general reflective appearance.

As for a matte finish proof. I personally can't tell the difference between those and regular strikes (even if the matte proof never hit circulation)

Yes, That was the point of my little joke. I was saying that I might be able to create some of the rarer matte finishes by putting regular proofs in circulation for a while. I guess it wasn't all that funny :(

I just opened 50 rolls and found the following:

    1966- 2
    1967- 2
    1968- 3
    1969- 2

Eh, about average I guess. Back to the bank on Tuesday.

I searched 50 rolls as well today. It yielded 41 coins-all but one silver. It was a proof. I still have 50 more rolls to go through tonight and then I'll post my totals. Stay tuned.

Talk about your ups and downs. The first 50 rolls included the following:

    3-1964
    2-1965
    2-1966
    11-1967
    12-1968
    8-1969

    1-1957 Franklin
    1-1958 Franklin

    1-1992S Proof

    1-2004

The second 50 was much more of a disappointment and probably more typical.

    1-1968
    1-1969

Heck of a week for halves anyway.
