Why do I not find any 1970 halfs? Were those only released to collectors like the 1987?

Don't need to return them, just go get 1/4 tank of gas.

There were only 1970-D half dollars minted...and only released in Mintsets....people DO find them in change so keep on hunting!

Well I finished my box of half dollars. This is what I found...

    1 1963 Franklin
    4 1964 JFKs
    1 1966 JFK
    3 1967 JFKs
    4 1968-D JFKs
    1 1969-D JFK

    In Non silver
18 2004 Ps and 14 2004Ds plus/minus a few I did not keep the ones in the poorest condition.

    4 2002-D

    1999 P

EDIT recounted the numbers and got rid of the other dates I am going to spend

Not as good a return as you, AvgCollector ...but on my second 50 rolls....

    1-2001-D

    3-1967s

    1-1968-D

    1-1991-S [proof ?]

1-1985-S sad proof with cheek gouge

plus others to add to my new Kennedy collection [ damnit ]

Still can't see any doubling on the 72, 73, 74-D, or 77s....things so worn they all look rounded on the numbers.

    Oh well....:eek:hya:

Thanks. I honestly thought mine was only ok but I guess it is not bad for a silver return and especially for the 00s half dollars. A lot of them were in really poor condition. Even the 1999s were worn down terribly. It is surprising, and then the early Kennedys are in better condition. I don't get it. I also don't see how Silver can still be found in these, but I am not complaining. I just need a bank now to return everything to that I have searched.

Keep anything from 2002-date as they were not released into circulation and have mintages of about 3 million each (IIRC), the 2000, 2001, and 1996 coins are all plentiful and I send all of mine back. I keep the 99's because they are relatively less common than most (9 million minted, IIRC), but they tend to be beaten all to heck.

    Nice finds!

    Hi Cave,

You have said you sell off some of your extra 90 and 40 %ers to help finance your numismatic purchases.

Do you have an exit strategy on the lower mintage clad proofs and others. I'm keeping some around, but not sure they will ever be worth over face in my lifetime. You're much younger than I am.

    Regards!

Thanks, The Cave Troll. I am going to edit some of the numbers again and actually count the 2004s.

I do have one question though if anyone knows. one of the 2004 Ds,that I did notice seems to have a weird finish. I do not know if it is Satin Finish as I did not buy the uncirculated set. But compared to the others it is even through out. It isn't shiny at all. The other 2004s are almost proof like and have some reflective properties. The other one is dull and even through out, so I doubt worn. I honestly am not sure unless it is just me and there is no difference. I know pictures would help.

If this helps at all I just got a roll of the new state quarters from the bank and in the new condition they compare to the rest of the 2004s and not the one seperate one I have.

Edit Changed two to one. The other one seems to just be worn. I did notice this though the other coins seem to reflect light more than the one that is different if this helps.

I don't have much of an exit strategy. Youth is a factor in that since I figure I've 50-60 years before I "assume room temperature", giving me plenty of time to figure out what to do with them. I expect that eventually I will sell them, or give them to my heirs, but that is a decision for another day. Since I have so little invested in them (face value only) I am only losing the time-value of my investment which is rather modest.

The mint has changed its minting techniques in the last few years to prolong die life and speed up production in attempts to reduce minting costs. The result is a flatter featured coin that IMHO just doesn't hold up. Put a 1972 next to a 1999 and you'll see the design changes.

Another factor is casinos. I don't know how often they rotate their stock of halfs with the goverment, but its easy to spot that they buy them in bulk batches. Casino coins tend to have beat to snot features with most or all of their edge reeding missing.

I went through 8 boxes today:
    Walker
    1944
    1945
    Franklin
    1960-D
    1961
    Kennedy
    1964 3
    40% 48
    Proofs
    1976
    1958 Franklin

Also, I found one very interesting coin which I never thought that I'd encounter in a box of halves. A 1952 George Washington Carver commemerative half. It grades XF to AU. So, its not valuable, but its still pretty cool to find in a box. Best of luck to all.

Just got a box from the bank. Found 3 67s so far. No 90% silver A lot of 02s though. Are they worth keeping?

    Thanks.

I'd keep them. They weren't released into circulation and they have mintages in the 2.5-3 million range which is a fraction of most dates. Remember that from 1824-1838 no year saw fewer than 2.94 million halves struck, so these are just as rare (at the time of manufacture), only they were one of the most common coins of their era and the 2002 halves are one of the least common regular issues of our era.

It is for me too, but I have the advantage of working at the bank, so the money isn't out of my account for too long.
