I agree, I can count on one hand the number of times I've gotten a roll with too few coins in it.

I think it is a symptom of your rolls having been hand-packed instead of mechanically packed.

The pressing for the vault is definitely a must, but don't snub the "two coins"/loose coins.....that's how I got my mini-load last month ;) (see my recent posts in this thread).

    Cave Troll,

What a fantastic reply. Thank you very much for all of your information. I particularly find it interesting that you advice opening an account at a bank where you can order halves. I hadn't thought of it, but that sounds like a really good idea.

I'll be printing out your post to refer to. Thanks again for such a long informative post. :)

no problem, I love searching halves, and there are certainly enough to go around!

The bank I get my halves from is in a town of 600 people. I asked the teller where they got the halves from. She said that they would come from their main branch, which is in a town of 1,500 people. She said if they didn't have enough she thought they would order them from the Federal Reserve in Chicago. This batch wasn't bad so I'll keep ordering them until the main office runs out and then I will probably start getting actual Fed boxes.

That's good, news, the Fed in Chicago is where my boxes come from, and I've been pleased with the results.

I just checked out my 7 boxes. One of them has 5 Walkers and 2 Franklins visiable on top. To quote Mr. Burns "eeeeeexcellent". I'll be searching that box last.

Finished this $500. 5-90% silver, 25-40% silver, 1977-S, and 2002-P. Also filled a few open holes in my Dansco album but no DDOs. The only roll that was short was the Don't Give Out roll.

I've only searched 1448 coins so far and my numbers by decade are

    60s - 39
    70s - 909
    80s - 252
    90s - 239
    00s - 9

    Does this sound about average?

Well, you are at about 3x the average for your "60's" number, but other than that it looks about right. So far a fabulous start! Eventually you will get a box that is all (or nearly so) 2000 D's then your numbers will shift some.

Here are a couple links for you guys that are asking about whether the dealer paying 4x face value for your silver coins is appropriate.

Here is a site that I found (but haven't used yet) to potentially send my silver coinage in for cash.....
    http://www.midwestrefineries.com/packaging.htm

I've asked them how they go about calculating how much they pay for silver coins, but I think it's more than 4x face value. According to my calculations, 90% silver dimes will fetch in the neighborhood of $.70 a piece using $9.00/oz silver price based on the silver weight in ozs. of the coins as noted in the Red Book. it's been a while since I did that quick math, but I think I'm in the neighborhood. I believe, again, remembering a couple of weeks back when I did the quick math, the 90% silver halves will fetch in the neighborhood of $3.00 per for their silver content with silver at $9.00 per ounce. somebody feel free to check that math as I did it quite quickly using the information in the 2004 Red Book for the silver coins that I have.

:D I saw your post before you edited it ;)
Yes...I did the math and it should be like $0.66 cents IMHO...

When you guys go to the bank do you ask specifically for boxes from the Federal Reserve, and then they make a special order from them rather than a main branch office? The wife of a guy I throw darts with works in another local bank. She said they get their coins from Brinks, but she is going to ask if they can order Federal Reserve boxes.

Speedy, is that $0.66 for 90% or 40% halves? Oops...I bet that was for the dimes.

  15. skane

That is for the 90% silver dimes.

I got $100.00 in halfs today from the bank. I got 9-40%. Right now I get around $1.00 or $1.05 from my coin guy for 40% halfs.

Here's a site for base metal prices, it's updated with silver values. coinflation.com

Curious, what did they charge you to buy the rolls, and what do you do with the remaining 191 coins (redeem them for cash later)? Just trying to understand why I'm not doing this...

I get my rolls from different banks and return them to just 1 bank. I have gone to about 35 or 40 different banks over the past year and I haven't been charged yet. They want to get rid of them. Some tell me they take up to much space.

You know, that's interesting. I'll bet it only applies to halfs. It makes sense, though. Thx smithrow1.
