Nice pulls Moen! By the way, a holed Kennedy is just what it sounds like, a half dollar with a hole in it.

You mean like somebody took a drillpress to it or something. Why would that be collectable?

Well, dag nabit, I'm a gonna git some drillin' done. I still don't see the value or collectability of holed coins but since I have so many rejects to return, I might as well drill a few. Thanks for the link Willie!

Well, The new bank seems to be working. Of the 17 rolls I've recieved from them I have pulled 2-67, 1-66, 1-68, and 5-64's. The 64's are from the 11 rolls I picked up at lunch.

I think that thats pretty darn good so I ordered a $1000 bag. I'll get it next Tuesday so we'll see. Wish me Luck.

I just got started cracking half-dollar rolls myself. Before I post what I found, let me preface by saying I have no numismatic background at all. I'm a silver guy, and for me an exciting find in pocket change was finding Hungarian forints one time. ;)

In the last week, I've gone through 36 rolls. 18 of them (all from the same bank) had absolutely nothing in them, so this is what I found entirely in those other 18 rolls.

1964 -- 5 coins (one of them has terrific luster to it)
1965 -- 1 coin (back is in terrific shape, front has some scratches)
    1966 -- 2 coins
    1967 -- 12 coins
    1968 -- 3 coins (all D, one looks beautiful)
1982P -- 2 coins (one has a weak D strike, the other very clearly defined)
    1999D -- 1 coin
    1999P -- 1 coin

I don't think that's too shabby for a first-timer there. This puts me .9% of the way to a $1000 bag of 40% and .25% of the way to a 90% bag. ;)

My question is, since there's no silver in the 1982s or 1999s, is the attraction mainly based on being a tough date? And in terms of "value", where would it compare to a 40% or 90%?

Not quite sure what you are asking. Are you asking about these 2 coins in terms of finding them while roll searching? If so, the answer is simply that 82S and 99S would be proof coins that found their way into circulation. Fun to find, but not worth much b/c generally proofs don't fair well in ciruculation and can be easily obtained in high quality.

The years to look for in UNC are

    1970D
    1987 P&D
1999 P&D (and every year after)

These years have only been issued in mint sets, not as general circulation.

    lawdog,

I usually type the plural of something without an apostrophe; when I wrote "1982s" I meant "multiple 1982 coins", rather than "1982-S". I apologize for the confusion.

    chicken_little,

I come from the tanking, er, great state of Ohio. Let's just say that I've been hedging with silver because there's no way the state's economic tailspin will be righted anytime soon.

Just a general question for the forum though. Are there any banks that you know of who simply do not keep half-dollar rolls at all? I've tried four different branches of Bank One and all have said that as soon as they get a roll it gets sent back to the Fed; I wasn't sure if this was a company-wide policy or maybe just in this particular area of Ohio. I've had hit-or-miss success at various other ones (I've tried at least one branch of all the major banks in the area to see if they have a similar policy).

Nathan, where in Ohio do you exactly live, because the Bank One I went to gave me like two rolls of silver coins.
Not to mention another bank one gave me three more silver halves. Bank One is delivering man.

On Monday of this week I took a road trip in search of Kennedy halves at "new" banks outside of the immediate area in which I live. I drove about 75 miles away from home, turned around, and visited every bank I passed along the way- a total of 5. Two of the banks were branches of Wells Fargo. I got the same story at both: They used to keep lots of halves around, but no one wanted them, so they "sent them back." I was crushed! I didn't think to ask if it was an institution-wide policy or a decision made at the local branch. I got the latter impression from the way the teller said "we" decided to send them back.

The other 3 banks were smaller regional/local. They had a total of 61 rolls between them, but I could tell, even as they were counting them out to me, that they had been picked over- crimped ended rolls with one side torn open and clumsily pressed back into shape. Predictably, I didn't find one coin worth keeping, other than a 1976 Eisenhower dollar sitting in a teller's coin tray. I was actually a little surprised that she let it go.

1999 was numerically a lower production year of the Kennedy, so some collectors hang on to them because they are a bit rarer than most other years. I've run across hundreds. I picked a P and a D for the Dansco album and I return the rest.

Here's the story on banks and shipping out coins. Any of the major banks ship out anything they don't use i.e. Half Dollars, Dolalr coins, $2 Bills, $500 Bills, and $1000 Bills (not that you see many of them). Banks, like any other business, are out to make money. So, if something just sits in the bank's vault, the instution is losing out on the money that could be made by taking that cash or coin and investing it. Banks always try to keep the bare minimum in the branch offices so that they can make money off of your money. I'm not going to lie to you, before I started working at a bank I envisioned a vault with huge piles of money stacked around. In fact, there is hardly any cash in the vault (relatively speaking), and even less coin. The only true exception to the rule of shipping out cash and coin are independent local banks. These establishments sometimes just let things sit in their vaults for years at a time. So, if your looking for rolls of silver that have sat untouched since the 1960's, these banks are by far the best bet.

Home with a sick little one, so I decided he needed a box of half dollars to search. We found:

    1-1963 Franklin
    2-1964's
    1-1965
    2-1966's
    7-1967's
    12-1968's
    2-1969's

    AND.....

    The very first....

    Never found in circulation before....

    Hold your breath....

    1970-D echo! echo! echo!

In great shape too! The best find in weeks.

    Great find, Moen!

Believe that is the only traditional (excluding double dies, etc.) Kennedy that I have not found. I'd better get busy again. Right after you found your Barber, I pulled my first Barber.

Currently I'm struggling to find unsearched halves. I'm equally impressed as to how you seem to be able to find unsearched boxes?? Would love to know your secret, either here or via PM!!

I was sorting some returns today and found my first 2004-D. Into the Dansco it went.

    Danks!

It's not a secret. I get 500 dollar boxes that are wrapped and delivered by the Fed to the banks I frequent. They will order me as many boxes as I want. I only return my rejects to one bank. Oddly enough, it's the one with the best counting machine. I can dump 1500 in kennedy's and be out the door in 5 minutes.

The rolls customers turn in and local business collections don't have a whole lot unless someone decides to dump their silver. Happens, but not often enough. Make sure you ask for only boxes and you tend to get them unopened directly from the Fed.

In the last couple of months, I have pulled 233 40% silvers and 36 90% silvers and at least 15 Franklins and 10 Walkers and one Barber. Two gold plated counter stamps and several holed Kennedy's(why, I don't know why anyone would want holed Kennedys).

    I have found 4 of those but never a 2002 D or P.
