I just read the article on the Edward III Sterling in the Withers book. It was very interesting indeed. I am putting one of these on my list. I love the 3/4 portrait. This alone seems out of place for Aquitaine. I really like a good mystery.
I see the Edward III Esterlin come up for auction on CNG from time to time. Hopefully you will be able to find one without too much hunting. The Henry II Anglo-Gallic coins are very similar too from what recall from the Withers book.

Not very much. I think I was bidding against one other person. I only had to raise my bid three times before winning the lot. I believe the initial description was the reason for this. The initial description did not mention the Eleanor. You had to click on the description to see that there was an Eleanor in the lot. I think if this was mentioned in the initial description, the lot would have gone higher. Coins of Eleanor are considered common in the reference "Anglo-Gallic" coins. However they are VERY popular and scarcely come up for sale.
Very interesting lot and well chosen, Andrew. Congratulations! That coin of Eleanor of Aquitaine really does seem to be a scarce issue. Glad you spotted it. The DNW action was quite interesting - I was planning to follow it live but unfortunately my strength was sapped after Irma and the long flight home. I slept through most of it... (glad I hat put a few bids in early).
Yes, I was successful with one lot, a 1st century denarius, which I 'really wanted'; lost out, however, on a sestertius of Nero which I only halfway wanted (it was really the nice green patina which attracted me). I will post my win as soon as I take my own pictures. I am happy.
I just received the coins. They came with old tickets and old coin envelopes. I took a photo of the Eleanor of Aquitaine. I think this looks much better than in the group photo the auction house shot.
