The first two photos look like a worn die strike but the third photo shows it’s slightly off center. Nice find but only worth a couple of dollars. Welcome to CT.
Just wondering.... what kind of quality control do they have at the mints? When it costs more to mint coins than the value they have in the market, I guess it just isn't worth looking through millions of pennies to find one that is off center.
The Philadelphia and Denver mints Mint over 5 billion cents each year. I highly doubt that 1000 of them off center. I have no figures to prove otherwise but I think I’m close. It’s an extremely small percentage and one would think they would be worth more but it happens so frequently they’re not. Some with a date are worth more than others with a date because they are more scarce. And ones without a date are worth less.
What I like about the one I have is that the letter L in liberty and part of "IN GOD WE TRUST" looks like it is struck on the rim itself. That's what seems unique about it.
Yes but that is what happens when the die itself is severely worn and in desperate need of replacement. It appears like and is called a ridge ring.
