You might also want to check out this sites For Sale forum (and Trade forum). There were just some flying eagle cents for sale from a user for $20 a pop. I thought that was fair myself (I bought one for my first example), and plus it helps a member of our community that we interact with on a one to one basis instead of ebay and their anonymity and foolish fees, plus for the most part you can ask around up here and get a feel for the seller or item in question. Im pretty new to this site too, but ive found most of the 'regulars' on this site are more than willing to help out us new comers and get us going in the right direction.

My son is just getting into the hobby and I advised him find a coin series that he is interested in (Jefferson nickels) and then to start collecting coins that he comes across through everyday usage and to replace a coin whenever he finds a better coin. While he's doing this to look that a photo grade series of what constitute a coin in MS - G.

He's amassed a very find collection just from circulation and it really didn't cost him anything to speak of. He has since gone on to other coins, but he basically starts off a new collection just from circulation.

He's now talking about moving on to other coins like Indian cents or whatever.

In the meantime he has started to collect annual sets with the idea of stripping out the coins that he wants for a better album.

This way he's learned the basics without spending a lot of money. Young people really don't start off with the information necessary to amass a great collection.

This is the way that I started collecting and have moved on to other coins. First start off with something that you're interested in and learn that. But above be passionate about what you collecting and learn.
