Ever done something and immediately stepped back and wondered where on earth your brain was the previous moment? I been working a high grade war nickel set and found one that checked the boxes for me. It was supposed to arrive Friday. After a very harried day at work, I arrived home to find my nickel had arrived a day early…. The day is looking up! So I open the envelope to find my coin wrapped in the obligatory bubble wrap. I pull out my ever trusty Old Timer and slice the bubble wrap and immediately I know what I just did. I sliced right into the dad-gummed holder! I just wanted to kick myself! I swear I am not typically this bereft of common sense…. Though my wife may disagree…. Dangit!!!
Yeah... I saw a video on how to re-center a coin in a newer PCGS holder. I tried it on a proof Mercury Dime and now I have a cracked corner in the holder.
Is it a deep cut? If it's shallow, you may be able to buff it out. I've cleaned up slabs with some nasty looking scuffs/minor scratches with headlight cleaner and they turned out decent.
Ouch.. happens to us all from time to time I think. But at least it doesn't impair the view of the coin. I'm curious, what are your criteria? I'm doing the same set but in the raw (coins that is). Just need my 44D and 45D.
Doesn’t decrease the value if you never sell it. The value of of the experience, priceless. You’ll never forget it
It's your penance for contributing to the sanctioned sin-against-numismatics that is the TPG slabbed coin market.
