And to my surprise it contained a 1921 Peace Dollar. That’s the first year of issue and only 1,006,473 were minted. It’s in Fine condition at the least and may be even very fine. I didn’t check as it’s the 4th or 5th one I own. I wasn’t going to buy this at the auction I was on but I got it for $85.00, and that’s a bargain. I’ve had the package since February so I’m glad I finally got to open it. The bargains are out there.
very nice and very nice price too yup yup I paid a bit more (a bit over twice that) but after many years of hunting I finaly aquired one earlier this summer at a fantastic price bargains are to be found if you have the patience to wait long enough
All 1921 Peace Dollars are low relief. The design was found to be impractical and was lowered in 1922. 35,401 were minted in 1922 and most of them were melted at the mint. A matte finish 1922 Peace Dollar will cost well over $200,000 today and that why I don’t own one. The design was a weak strike on high relief coins. It was changed to low relief to get a stronger strike but all Peace Dollars seem to be a weak strike.
The 1921 were all HIGH relief, which wore the dies very quickly. Then they went to low relief. They claim there are (7?) HR 1922s but that might be a myth.
@capthank My mistake. All 1921 Peace Dollars are high relief. The design caused problems and that’s why the dies were made in low relief the following year. I’ve been making dumb mistakes since I started this new medication. It’s driving me nuts. Sorry if I confused you. Edited to correct spelling
