Sharper pics, thanks. What's that thing in the field behind the eagles head? Just to mention one area in the fields that looks funny.
not trying to be mean, but literally "everyone" says that ... just a quick glance are your new pics it's obvious to me and I'm not a Morgan collector. US coins are quite well consistent and sharp in all the lettering and positioning. Yours is not. and the color is consistent with all the chinese fakes.
I'm sure everyone on Coin Talk is familiar with VamWorld.com and studies the die characteristics of all raw rare Morgan and Peace dollars they buy from anywhere. If not, remember to go to VamWorld.com before you buy. Most of us carry a phone with data access and can go to VAM World to confirm die diagnostics of a raw coin. When I go flea marketing or anywhere coins may be available, Including coin shops and coin shows, I carry a bag with scale, microscope, magnet and sometimes a small machine to determine gold or silver. Unfortunately you coin is a counterfeit. Your coin has many characteristics that shout "I'm a counterfeit" do not buy me. Don't be depressed buying a counterfeit. It is a learning experience. I and other coin club members have done talks on Counterfeit and altered coins at coin club meetings in the Scranton, PA area complete with both genuine and altered or counterfeit coins to educate the members. If you have the opportunity, join an informative coin club in your area. Ask questions, read books from their library and study die characteristics and the minting process. Happy coin collecting.
Hey I understand and I’m trying to learn aside from the color which is weird how it’s so different in the last 2 pics taken from the same place what other things should I look for ? I’m not a Morgan collector but I do get them if I find them. I’m just trying to learn what I should look for and how to be more selective. I do have books and have been learning a lot from the people on this forum.
Hmm, carry your 1896 with you to compare the dentils, lettering, sharpness in strike details, sharpness of Ms Liberties features, word LIBERTY. Remember VamWorld.com to refer to. Learn "transfer die counterfeits". These are very deceptive but still are not quite right when it comes to die gouges. But the counterfeiters are getting better. I recently determined an 1896-S Morgan was counterfeit since it was .3 of a gram overweight, 94% silver, the very near date variety but the reverse wasn't from any know S die for 1896 including the reverse die used for the reverse of the very near date. VamWorld.com. I've only been a collector for 64 years and I'm sure there are experts on here who will help you as much as possible. Enjoy Coin collecting and Coin Talk. It's a HISTORY Lesson.
That's a good clue - the pawn shop probably gave the guy $15-20 for it, who took the money and ran - a valuable coin would not be dealt for a few dollars and left unclaimed.
So not that I don’t trust your opinions but I went to a rare coin dealer he said it appears to be a genuine 1889cc Morgan. He said it looks like it has been harshly cleaned and that it has a weird look but he said it is a genuine coin. He suggested that I see if it can be cleaned professionally and slabbed. I know not to clean it myself and I don’t see lines showing that it has been cleaned so I assume it is more stained than anything.
If you really believe it's real, and you don't have much in the coin anyway, get it certified and post the pics when you get it back.
I am new to coin collecting, and have a ton to learn, but I have close to 100 Morgan dollars (all different years and mints) sitting on the desk in front of me, and none of them have the dimples in the feathers that this coin has...
Maybe it’s pmd on the wing it is an old coin I don’t know? What I do know is that people hers say it’s fake and the authorized dealer for NGC says it’s a genuine coin only that it might not grade do to cleaning residue but let me tell you it looks nothing like the color in these pics and I don’t know why. I’m assuming that NGC has different cleaning methods for different types of things and hopefully they can clean it and it comes back legit. I will still do reasearch first so any feedback is welcome I really do value your opinions.
True. Does anyone have any idea what they charge to have the coin cleaned and graded I’ve never done it before I see the membership prices I’m just trying to get an idea of what it might cost.
Before you send your coin ( I have already said it is counterfeit) in for conservation, authenticating and grading at tremendous cost, send it to any TPG for authenticating service. I use SEGS since Larry Briggs is an expert on Morgan and Peace Dollars. Their service is also reasonable. When it comes back counterfeit and not encapsulated, you will be out only about $35 plus what you have invested in the purchase of the coin. You can also then take the paperwork back to the pawn shop and demand your money be returned if you have a proper photo receipt of the coin they sold you matching your coin. Most buyers don't think of getting a photo receipt and then can't get their money back since the dealer could say that wasn't the coin they sold you. If you go to the VamWorld website and click on Morgan dollars and then click on 89-CC, you can then click on reverses and see all the reverse CC and you sill see that no CC die matches the reverse of your coin with CC's so close together or the E of AMERICA with that weakness or bulge or dentils that look like beads. Don't give up on coin collecting. We are all here to help new and older collectors. Some of us may consult for the secret service on counterfeit and altered coins, some of us are NGC or PCGS submitters, some work for the TPG companies. Experts on Coin Talk won't steer you wrong.
Thank you and I appreciate all the info that you all give I have learned a lot from this site and the people here. I know there are things to look for and each coin matches a die my problem is when I’m told it’s fake and then told its real ( I’m sure you can see my confusion) I don’t doubt opinions and if it is fake I will definitely let the grading company know about the company that they are promoting.
