I agree, but seriously doubt we will ever see such proof. Either way, that's still a separate matter. Even if a coin was body-bagged for being ugly, that's not nearly the same thing as grading (as opposed to body-bagging) a VF coin VG. Of course none of that matters either, because one particular poster to this thread can't possibly be wrong, since information and facts don't matter.
I am a buyer of ALL 1928 Peace Dollars at Bullion Prices! Take that coin to any coin show and easily walk out with a few C notes in your pocket.
I have no reason to do that if you can't believe what I;m saying there's nothing else i could say I don;t really care if anybody believes me if you can;t take my word for it it's pretty sad. JC
No -- that's the second thing that goes. The first thing . . . . . . hmm, I seem to have forgotten . . . :smile
That is so absurd C notes the coin is probably a S mint lucky you get Maybe 30 bucks for it with all that junk on it. I do see the S and so does toad.
On the other hand, if you perceive that your word is no good, maybe you have some work to do to clean up your reputation and attitude.
From NGC's website: NGC "No Grade" Coin Types Unnatural Coloration Mechanical Damage Environmental Damage PVC Contamination Improper Cleaning Mechanical Repairs Counterfeits Altered Surfaces Mint-Made Flaws Non-Eligible Types Conspicuously absent from the above list (quotes taken from JC as the reason(s) NGC supposedly rejected the coin): " uglyness of the fields" " unattractive fields" "ulgly toning unattractive fields" "unattractive fields which was stated the toning of the coin poor eye apeal" "unattarctive fields due to extreme bad eye apeal ugly fields" And I will repeat one last time....Body-bagging a coin for a problem does not equate with grading an ugly VF coin, VG. This will be my last post to this thread folks. Enjoy the remainder of this pointless debate without me.
Joe, you are absolutely right, assuming that you have been grading coins since the Eisenhower administration. I don't have a copy of the ANA standards handy, can you post verbatim the part about dropping multiple grades for unattractive toning on circulated coins? Edition and page number would be great, as well. Thanks!
Hey -- let's move on! Let's move on past the debate between JC and the others. Nobody's going to convince anybody to change there mind at this piont. I learned a whole lot in the first 50-100 messages or so, but the noise-to-signal ratio is getting worse. And I thank everybody for their nice comments. As far as the coin goes -- I've not taken anything personally or gotten discouraged. As I mentioned: it's not my coin anyway, and I'm in a win-win situation. If it's only worth $20, I can buy it. If it's worth $350, my friend will be happy. (And to the poster who suggested I try to purchase it as a filler -- I'd love to, but I really can't. I have two teenagers soon to go to college). What I'd like to move on to is, actually, a question from the original post (imagine that!), some 100+ messages ago, which was: what should I do now? The current owner (after I told him of this discussion) told me he's in no hurry, and suggested I have it looked at in person by somebody -- either a coin dealer (I don't really know any), a coin show (no major ones around here that I know of), or send it off to a grading service -- to determine grade and get an official pronouncement of whether it's a "P" (which I think it is using my 8x loupe, which shows more than the 2D pix I posted) or "S". So, thoughts, anyone? (And I can't tell how how much I appreciate all this free advice, which I presume, I hope, is useful to others when/if they run into a key-date kind of coin)
Elaborate elaborate elaborate slaborate. i don't have to, listen to a word you say i know your kind. JC
You may not take my word for it, but if I was you I would bring it to a dealer even if you have to travel a little bit or just submitt it to get looked at to determine if the coin was tampered with to see if it's an s mint or P first without it being graded it's cheaper keep it raw I would. JC
Well whoever graded my coin or bodybaged my coin at NGC's must have been fired for his wrong doings or he was inexperianced or drunk My coin came back to me with that terminology which was stated in your descriptions there's no reason for me to prove this to you believe it or not that's your choice. and everybody elses choice. JC
OK People lets get this back on topic and away from personalities PLEASE Now my opinion I like the coin
To the OPENING OP. There are more than a few dealers here on CT. Maybe you should take a little time and send it one of them for evaluation? Shipping is only a few bucks and you would spend that on gas these days. I know Penny Lady, Arizona Jack, Borgovan, Budgood are just a few that I would personally trust.
Sholom, I would be happy to look at it for you if you like, as would any of a number of people here. We have all pretty much agreed that in order to be more sure about this coin, an in-hand evaluation is necessary. I will volunteer my services if you need them. If you need a reference or two, just ask. I think my reputation here is pretty solid.
Sholom, I think it is in your best interest to take Mike up on his generous offer rather than rely on a local coin dealer who might not have your best interest in mind.
