I have strayed away from my beaten path of Roman Bronzes and got a Denarius for a change. It is neither a portrait coin nor a rare type or of high grade, and it does have what looks like banker´s marks, but contrary to my Octavian / Caesar portrait bronze (seen below) it is a lifetime issue and I like the idea that it did travel with Caesar and his army before his assassination. - / CAESAR Diademed head of Venus right, with Cupid behind shoulder / Trophy of Gallic arms, composed of helmet and cuirass, oval shield and carnyx in each hand; two seated captives at base, the one on left a female in attitude of dejection, resting head in right hand, the one on right a bearded male with hands bound behind him. Denarius, military mint traveling with Caesar in Spain, late 46-early 45 b.C. 3,62 g / 19 mm Crawford 468/1; RSC 13; CRI 58; Sydenham 1014 Here is my rare but ugly portrait bronze: DIVOS [IVLIVS] / CAESAR – DIVI F Wreathed head of Caesar to right / bare head of Octavian to right with slight beard AE As or Dupondius, uncertain Italian mint, 38 b.C. Cohen 3; Sydenham 1336; RPC 620; Sear Imperators 308; Crawford 535/1 Some day I should upgrade to a portrait Denarius or a decent bronze, but for now these must do Feel free to show your Caesars!!!
Very Nice!! I also like the idea of a 'lifetime' issue that may have traveled along with JC and his army....but I'm after a nice and affordable posthumous denarius, struck at Anthony's military mint about a year after the assassination and bearing a portrait of both Anthony and JC.
I'm actually looking for one of these types, but cannot afford to drop a lot on one. Yours has character.

Well, since we're going off OP type here are my only other JC coins. The portrait coin was issued in the few months after the assassination on JC. I have wondered if it was intended to be a lifetime issue but didn't quite make it. It's apparently quite scarce.
I've bid on plenty, but yet to win one. Some of the JCs are really attractive even in lower grades. And I even prefer the Aeneas and Anchises in lower grade. The sharp detail on the faces doesn't do it for me. With a worn coin you can imagine the original was better than it actually was!
Nice OP coin. Well-circulated but still really appealing. Mine was struck with a worn reverse die, which I find gives it a somewhat haunted look, complementing the creepy little cupid on the obverse.
Welcome to the world of roman silver! A nice coin and type to start with. You can't go wrong with a denarius of J.C. I am a bronze man myself, but have added quite a few denarii to my collection over the years for some interesting types. This is my denarius of JC. One of the more common types and moneyers, and somewhat unevenly struck on an irregular planchet. But it has charm (and was quite affordable).
