Hey guys..so my Parthian adventure continues! This time, with a drachm of Vardanes II, a recent win from the latest FSR auction. Really like this one! The strike is nice and full, with a lot of detail, made even better by the nice cabinet tone on the coin. Also, as I am learning, this type is also a bit scarcer as there are 5 diadem ribbons as opposed to the typical 2 or 3 which are found on most Parthian coins. Hope you enjoy, and if anyone has anything new (related or not) feel free to post! Vardanes II was the son of Vologases I, and ruled Parthia only about 3 years, from 55-58 A.D. Like many a Parthian King, Vardanes came to power via a brief conflict with his father. However, his reign was short, and not much is known of him. Vardanes II AR drachm Ca. 55-58 A.D. 3.64 gm. 21X17mm. Sellwood 69.13 Ecbatana mint ex. Frank S. Robinson
Also, just curious guys, just noticed this little bit of green between the archers leg on the reverse...what is this? Is it some type of encrustation?
That's a super nice coin! As to your request, I do indeed have a new Parthian. How do you like it? Vologases VI (208-222), AR drachm, Ekbatana mint.
It is hard to find one with full legend but I bought this one because it has the top line intact. I prefer it to the one I lost at the bottom.
Very nice coin, @DBDc80! You're off to a great start on your Parthian collection. Get used to typing that phrase a lot if you stick with Parthian coins. And now you're citing Sellwood numbers? My work here is done. (mounts horse, rides off into sunset)
