Oh, how people can pick nits about matters of trivia! Really, the multitude of comments regarding the 'authenticity' of Judas's coins I find really rather hilarious and sad at the same time. It was a stage play, people, with fake scenery, metaphorical costumes and actions (machine guns, paparazzi with 35mm SLR flash cameras, etc.), wispy pieces of cloth representing palm fronds, etc. There is absolutely no good reason why the stage coins should have been any more realistic or representative than they were. They did their part in telling the story!

Another point that seems to be missed here is that it is the same story told in the original cast and in the movie...but it is not the same cast and production crew, and therefore should in no way be expected to have any similarity to the original and earlier productions than is dictated by the script and lyrics of the songs. I loved the movie when it came out and seeing it was quite literally life-altering for me as unlike our friend 4to2centBC, seeing that movie turned me away from the path to atheism to understanding that there is more to Jesus Christ than I ever thought before. The movie cast was great in their performance, and I love that movie to this day. But this performance I found to have a grittier and more human reality to it than the earlier work, especially in the performance of John Legend and Brandon Victor Dixon (Judas). Saea Bareilles was good as Mary Magdalene, but she certainly didn't bring to the role what Yvonne Elliman brought to it.

Sorry, that was quite the digression, when what I really had intended only to say was that arguing about the authenticity of stage prop coins is rather a pointless exercise at best.
