I would never pay over $150.00 for a jefferson nickel things are just kind of heated up right now becuase of the new designs, it also depends on where you buy.

I saw at a big name food store the other day a set of 2 nickels...a 1936 Buff and a 205 Buff in a hard case holder...the store was selling them for $19.95.....

I started with a basic circulated set and gradually upgraded to BU's.After getting my 39d,I decided to get a nice 39s in BU.I'm gonna name names here, hope it's OK.I ordered it from Coast to Coast Coins and it looked beautiful..........UNTIL.......I looked at it under magnification. It is worn a bit and has dozens of tiny dings all over the obverse. It had obviously been treated in some way to give it lustre but was no better than an AU.Like an idiot, I never sent it back, maybe as a reminder.Actually I'm rather fond of it :)
So...here it is.The gold color is just light,it's bright silver. You can really see the nicks on his collar but they're everywhere!

I am not sure about population data but that 54 s FS nickel is pretty hard to come by. (I assume that your list is based on pop reports)

Above is a 1938-S with FULL STEPS (rare for 1938) and no blimishes, slight tarnishing. the best known examples of the coin are two MS-67's, I think this one grades higher, I may just send it in~~ I paid $4.95 for it in an antique shop!!!

below is a 1940-D, with full steps, one nick on the rim above "liberty" but still a very high grade coin. I found it in circulation.

    Hello,

Yes you're right. The '54-S with five full steps is hard to come by.
The information I relayed came from The Jefferson Nickel Analyst, by Bernard Nagengast.

FWIW, there seems to be some confusion as to what constitutes discriptive terms such as "BU" and "Full Steps" as they pertain to Jefferson nickels.
Perhaps some will find the information contained in the following links useful. Hope so, anyway. :)

Thanks to all who clarified that BU definition for me. Do you often find that many in circulation-like the older dates? And Mikjo0 and asian-chick...thanks for the pics.
