I'm glad this was bumped. An excellent write-up that I hadn't seen before. I need to do the same on here for the Barber dime transition varieties, one of these years. The 5c Rev of 38 / Rev of 40 is my go-to good example of the fickle nature of TPG designations. NGC refused to designate the dime ones a few years back, despite the initial discovery almost 45 years ago, although they do mention them in their blurbs (a lot of wrong information). ANACS sent me in a circle about it but I might try them again. Do you happen to know how the 1939 nickels came to be designated? Influential dealer?
Ah, yes. I have both Lehigh and Corgi on ignore. Totally forgot to check for that before posting . Thanks for the nice write up @Lehigh96 I have a stack of 1939s and 1940s I will go through soon (all circulated). Taking you off ignore (if I recall, I put you on because I couldn’t control myself and we got into silly arguments). You provide a valuable resource to the community and I appreciate it. Corgi’s staying on the iggy though…
Right back at ya, I can't even remember what our argument was about, only that it happened, and most of your posts are really interesting.
Awesome post, @Lehigh96 I read it back in the day probably around 2014, but detailed posts of this quality are few and far between, and it was a real pleasure to read it again. Also, hat tip to the couple of people who have dredged it up over the years. p.s. So many classic avatars of famous CT posters that are no longer active. Looking at you @tmoneyeagles and @gbroke. I miss seeing those on current threads...
I’ve gone through some 50 or so 1939 nickels. Most so worn I couldn’t see a single stair. But, the ones I could see clearly had the vertical indentation. Will keep searching them, and hopefully report a good one.
Seattlite86 I went through a number of 1939 nickels (a while back). No reverse double dies but I found 2 1938 reverses. It is posts like these that are educational and invaluable to collectors. I know we have lost some people but it was these kinds of posts that separated this site from the others.
This was a good write-up, thank you. Last night, I picked up a PR-66 1939-"Reverse of 1938" proof. Lowest mintage Jefferson proof, I believe. Though the 1939-"Reverse of 1940" proof has an estimated survival of 50 pieces, according PCGS. So that may be the real-real-real key date.
