Bruck does not go that far but I think you might be able to study these and find clues in the hand shape, finger count etc.
It just struck me that an interesting grouping could be made of high grade coins like this one that can only be IDed using Bruck clues. Not all are this concrete. Now I feel the need for one of these in EF from Alexandria with the SR. Mintmark optional.
That would be me. When Alisdair first published the translation, he asked me if I would add a review to encourage sales - if I liked it, which of course I did.
Here's my own pic of the commem - I like it even more in hand on account of the nice details, despite the missing mint mark. Also, I came across a Constans galley type with sharp reverse detail. Not rare from Siscia, but I think other collectors overlooked the sharp strike on this coin because of the odd, mottled patina. It's difficult to image, but look closely at the reverse, and you'll see all the fine features this complex type has to offer. I think the patina gives it abundant character...
This scarce Constantine GLORIA ROMANORVM type arrived today. I've been looking for one of these, but kept incurring "issues" - overpricing, damage, flat strikes, fake patinas. This one finally landed in the Goldilocks Zone. I once again prove that I can't photograph coins today. This example has one of those very glossy patinas that look great in hand, but leave you cursing at the camera. I believe this is a brief, Constantinople-only issue, but I haven't pulled out the books lately. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The dealer's pic of this coin shows the detail better, but the color is off with the oblique lighting. It's a deep forest-green...
I discovered a coin today that I didn't know I had - came in a large mixed lot, and I hadn't bothered to check everything. This is an unusually well-struck and centered example of the these AE4's of Theo II. But there are a couple of green spots that look suspicious - I need to poke at them and see if the coin needs any treatment. This one would be well-worth conserving if necessary...
