Precisely the point chrisild. Counterfeiters are out there to make money and it has been shown that roughly a dollar mark is profitable. This is also the reason why after 30 - 40 years that coins should be considered for upgrades. The 100 yen has remained the same for essentially 50+ years. Swiss coins also come to mind.

Mints should never be complacent. I personally like Canada's new multi ply plated steel. Not only is the cost of steel cheap, it makes it significantly harder to counterfeit as such planchets have unique metal signature.
