Oh! I have a 1944 5 sen piece~! It's all tin though, so it's super corroded. It's likely impossible to post an image of that people can see. NICE coins! I love Japanese coins!
Very nice write-up on Korean Coins. I collect Japanese coins (pre-WWII). I lived in Japan first as an exchange student and then returned to Japan as part of my work. Thank you, Siberian Man for sharing your coins. John
I've posted this link before but I might as well post this again. http://issuu.com/gxseries/docs/japan_dansco_type_set_1870 In the middle of designing an updated version of this but that will take a lot longer than what I hoped for. Edit: forgot to mention some of my other favorite that is not in this album.
Hmmm... I'm glad that these are not in your collection. That last one yen looks fake, to me. Perhaps its just been harshly treated and poorly imaged, though. The others, I don't know well enough to judge, but would be suspect of the koban-type piece as those are widely restruck as novelty collectibles. Any thoughts?
I enjoy the designs of the early Japanese modern coinage from Meiji and Taisho eras, enjoy: My favorite. An early type gold 5円:
Nice 5 yen coin Krispy. They are getting hard to find these days especially in such nice condition. As far as I am aware, the gold coin is genuine as it matches weight and size specification. Bear in mind that this coin is REALLY tiny at 13.5mm so it proved to be difficult to be photographed. The silver koban is not a restrike - it's a Akita 4 monme 6 bu gin-ban. It matches exactly on the scale and I have seen genuine examples at a coin dealer. There is a larger brother which is one that I missed. If there are any Japanese coins that I want to get my hands on, I might be looking at Japanese error coins or a nice oban. Now that's going to cost more than an arm and leg. The Dutch Indies colony coins would be nice too.
Thanks for sharing! Japan is my favorite country. I plan to visit it in a couple years and if enjoy my self maybe move there one day. They have a very large show in Tokyo during April that would like attend.
Here are some very affordable coins that I personally like. Just because they are struck in base metals don't mean that they cannot be attractive.
Taisho year 11 (1922) 年一十正大 (Read right to left) 大正 (Taisho emperor era, 1912-1926) 年一十 Jyu ichi nen (Read right to left) ( ten 十, 一 one, 年 year ) White it has a slightly off center hole punch its also ex-jewelry/holed, and thus damaged.
I really like the design on old Japanese coinage. Picked this one up recently just because it looked nice. Not high end or worth grading but nice. Meiji year 30 (1897) 50 sen
50 sen 1948, brass, weight - 2,8 g., size - 19 mm, thickness - 1,56 mm, mintage uncknown. Such coins were released at 1947 and 1948.
