However I've started my collection with a goal, of which there is one rule. Goal: Make a US Type Set. Rule: Don't pay anywhere close to book value. So over the winter..I've been working on my collection. My 2nd goal is to start upgrading when I get the money. I just bought the 1871 Seated 1/2 Saturday, and yes, while it's holed, I only gave 12.50 for it. I only gave $3 for the 1839 Dime.
Welcome back Tim! I hope you can find what you are looking for in collecting this time around. I have to take issue with your rule though. Some of my favorite coins in my collection were purchased at full "book" value and beyond. Remember that price guide numbers are for average coins and that to get quality coins with great eye appeal for the grade sometimes you have step up and pay a bit more.
I'm doing something similar. Slowly putting a type set together of mainly raw coins, enjoying the hunt, and learning a ton from the great members here.
