I would rather have the history with a coin compared to a round, and I'm willing to pay over melt to get that, just not ALOT over melt. I think it would be easier to sell a US coin compared to a round as well, I really hope it doesn't come down to that though. HOTN
yeah i know, but all of them are about 40 to 60 minutres away from me, im near atlantic city. thanks for info
Oh ok, i didnt realize you were from south jersey. You may have to take a ride to Philadelphia one day. im sure there are dealers there.
Did you end up buying anything? I'm late to the game - but if you don't have morgans or peace dollars yet - thats what I would buy. I'd buy common date circulated coins that you can get right at melt. You're buying them for the silver - you can toss them around in your hands without worrying and you'll be able to sell them easily enough if you decide to.
Yacorie, I did not get them yet. I took half a day last week to CRH and go buy the coins. Well wouldn't you know, the fuel pump on my wifes car went and she was stranded. So I saved her and got the car towed to my buddies place. I drove around that afternoon buying fuel pump and filter and carted my wife around rather than CRHing and buying my coins which I was so looking forward to. Rather than spending $65 on coins, I spent $220 fixing the car. Which was really a good deal BTW and I was happy it was not something more expensive. This Friday, I'm putting the $65 away and going to get my coins on Saturday. I'm leaning towards the Peace and Morgans for somewhere around melt so I can get at least two of them. Like you said, something common so I won't be worried about ruining any numismatic value they might have. HOTN
I'll post images on Monday when I get to my PC but here is a list of what I got. 1921 peace dollar about good to good condition $30 1921 Morgan nice condition $30 HOTN
A coin shop i visit sells Morgan's and peace dollars for 30 each. Seems like that's the going rate. I wanted to get one so bad but I wasnt sure if the price was fair. Now I wish I bought some. Good finds though. Look forward to seeing the pics.
This is what I got for $60 I was picking through a small box of silver dollars this jewler in town and found this 1921 Peace Dollar. It was the only one in a airtite case as shown. I know it's worn but I knew it was a key date and I figured since it was only $30 I would pick it up in case it holds an extra value. There was a 1884 Morgan and the 1921. I chose the 1921 since it was the last year those were made and it appears to be in good shape. I'm no good at grading because I just don't have any experience. I'm happy with my purchases and got two big chunks of silver for $60. Let me know what you all think. HOTN
A key Peace Dollar for $30, I figured I had to do it. Do you think it is worth more than $30 or it too worn? HOTN
I think I saw a 1928 in there too, but I can't remember. I'm going to go back to check it out. If it has no MM that is another key correct? HOTN
Yes and yes. Go back asap, because if you can get a 28 for $30 you'll be way ahead. My local coin shop has a 28 in AG/G for $120.
Yup. (sorry, my reply must have gotten stuck). Buying any '21 peace for $30 is a good deal, IMHO. Sheet is $100 in VG.
I'm guessing the 28 will end up being a 23 - sometimes have to do a double take when I see them in the bins
How can you tell? Just wondering. I know little about numismatics, trying to learn. The more knowledge I have when going to make a purchase the better off I'll be. Thx HOTN
They have that dull, lifeless look. Honestly, you overpaid for the '21, it's a common coin and cleaned to boot... I wouldn't have paid a cent over spot. The '21 has unnatural color for the amount of wear on that coin... but I would have paid $30 for it. I like that purchase. You're not gonna get problem-free '21's for $30. As far as identifying cleaned coins, it's just something that comes with time and practice. A higher-end coin, AU or better, will still have some of that cartwheel luster left... if you don't know what cartwheel luster looks like, grab a BU half and roll it back and forth in the light... The following video is a good example of what cartwheel luster looks like on a BU coin. Here's a little tutorial on how to identify cleaned coins...it's pretty helpful. For the Morgan I agree, but not for the peace dollar. Even cleaned that would normally cost more that $30. Even the Morgan would normally go in the 25-30$ range, so it wasn't that bad. For comparison, APMEX sells cull dollars for 28$ if bought singularly. I think you did well.
