Here's one version of the story behind the design. I don't recall where I got it: The reverse type recalls the legendary foundation of Lanuvium, the home of the moneyer's family. Dionysius of Halicarnassus mistakenly attributed the tradition to Lavinum. When Aeneas and the Trojans were building the new city, they noticed a fire in the adjacent forest. They discovered there a she-wolf laying wood on a brazier and an eagle fanning the flames with its wings. A fox, its tail heavy with water from a nearby stream, attempted to extinguish the fire, but the wolf and the eagle drove it off. Aeneas read this as an omen that Lanuvium would have to contend with the jealousy of her neighbors, but would in the end succeed to great fame.
Great coins all! What is the significance of wearing a goat skin hat? I think they would frown on that where I work. John
Basically, the goat was a symbol of fertility and was associated with Juno and Hera before her..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_(mythology)
