Once again, recent posts by members have inspired me to purchase additional coins. In this specific case, I have @vespasian70 and @Sallent to blame. Almost immediately upon and after they respectively posted their coins, I came across an example that fit my budget while still having sufficient eye-appeal to grab my interest. Since my birth sign is Capricorn, I couldn't resist the Titus commemorative on FAC, especially with that superb portrait---- and I've been after a coin with a Melqart portrait for quite a long while now and just had to have this example offered by CNG. AR denarius of Vespasian, commemorative issued by Titus circa 80-81 AD; Rome mint, 3.32 grams, 18.5 mm; Ric II part I, Titus 357; RSC II 497. Laureate head right (of Vespasian) DIVVS AVGVSTVS VESPASIANVS. Two Capricorns supporting shield with S C, globe below. AR Tetradrachm of Trajan; Tyre, Phoenicia, struck 103-109 AD; 24mm, 14.51 grams. Laureate head of Trajan right above Eagle standing right, club to left. Laureate bust of Melqart-Hercules right with lion's skin draped around neck. Prieur 1495, McAlee 455
I saw the Vespasian. Nice pick I'm fixing to tally my tab tomarrow & start over, lol. I'm true to my word. Glad you got it!!
I have no idea what you are talking about. Not sure how you got tempted by me to buy a Trajan Tetadrachm of Tyre. I tell you, I just don't know. PS: @Mikey Zee Yours is definitely a looker. Very nice.
@Mikey Zee , all bets are off. NASA says all the signs have shifted... The Astrology Industry is going nuts... http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/starfinder2/en/
Sweet score, Mikey-Z ...... I have also been on the look-out for a sweet Capricorn example (very cool images, eh?) Ummm, I'm a Leo so we probably wouldn't be able to get-it-on ... but I still like you as an awesome coin-friend (it's not you, it's me) Oh, speakin' of Leo ... this lil' darling went for $4500 (I want it!!) ... the best I can do is Taurus ... hey, do you dudes recognize this baby? => ooops sorry, once again Mikey-Z => your new OP-coin is awesome!! (congrats)
Both coins are great additions Mikey! The Vespasian has almost a 'kindly' looking portrait of the old soldier.
oh yeah...very nice MZ...both are cool. i love the trajan tyre with all the cool stuff on it....but a capricorn coin is high on my list as well.
@Mikey Zee I failed to mention, those are GREAT coins! I would take them both! I have looked at that Vespasian/Capricorn before... Lovit! And a Trajan Tet? Super coin!
Ha my wife is a Leo such a bi, um great person. I'm a gimini we're not supposed to get along. My first wife was a gimini to & that one didn't last long. But what do they know? I'm lovable but then I'm not. Lol.
There has been a long-running joke in the Georgia Tech band: "What is Capricorn?" Don't ask how it got started...
Ha! Another type I love! I'm a Capricorn too, so I had to have that one. The dual-portrait Trajan tet is cool, too. Pick "heads", and you can always win a coin toss with that one! (Just make sure you do the coin-tossing over something soft, like a pillow, eh? *wink*)
I love threads like these! Very nice additions @Mikey Zee ! @lordmarcovan is that out of your box of 20? I don't have any capricorns or any from Trajan but here's my humble Vespasian denarius and a cool bronze from Tyre: Vespasian, AD 1 Jul 69-24 Jun 79 AR, Denarius, 3.09g, 18mm; 6h; Rome, Jan-Jun AD 70 Obv.: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; laureate head right Rev.: COS ITER TR POT; Pax seated left on chair without back, branch in right hand, caduceus in left Tyre, Phoenica AE25, 12.5g; 12h; 2nd-1st Century BC Obv.: Head of Heracles-Melqart right Rev.: MHTPONΠOΛΕΩΝ; Club surmounted by monogram of Tyre, all within oak wreath
Yep, sure is. Though I presently have only six ancients in my Box of 20, once again one of the types I own has come up in a CoinTalk thread! Yay. I bought that one from FORVM late last year. In their description, they said it was the nicest example of the type they had handled to date. That fact wasn't what sold me on it, but it certainly didn't hurt. I had to use the layaway option to swing this one, but it was worth the wait. When @AncientJoe pointed out that an only slightly nicer example went for about four times the price of mine a month before I bought it, I was pleased.
Oh- and here's another Titus Capricorn I had back in my original 2007-08 Roman emperors collection, when I was just getting started with ancients. It was a modest-grade coin, but had some nice old cabinet toning. And the capricorn, of course. (So why the capricorn-and-globe motif with Titus, anyway? Anybody know?)
Many can probably answer that but I suspect @vespasian70 has the answer right off the top of his head... I LOVE that example you posted...I can EASILY believe it is one of the finest examples 'out there'. I've used the lay-a-way option a few times myself LOL Terrific post guys!! Thanks so much for sharing!!!
