What you do wih the data.. I've programmed a couple of data-based programs for the company I work for. In general, getting the data in isn't the big problem. Of course, it's tedious but requires very little "programming". Unfortunately, a lot of people looking for "free" software also want it to come with pre-built tables containing mintages and attributes of tons and tons of coins/paper money, etc. THAT takes a lot of time and is virtually impossible for an individual to keep up to date (and for free too!!!). But the big job of programming is the layout of your data and pretty printouts and reports. And of course, you should be able to pick out 2 or 5 or 10 or 100 attributes and they should all display and/or print out nicely. If someone needed a program to collect mercury dimes in all variations with an agreed upon set of attributes and outputs, that piece of software could be written quite easily. It's when you add the myriad options to allow the user to put in virtually anything that it becomes impossible or costly. Basically people want all the flexibility of an Excel, but that specializes in coins. My advise is to take the time you spend searching for the magical free software and invest that time by studying Microsoft Access. It'll be time well-spent and you don't have to become a geek to get really cool results. Plus you'll also be able to apply it to home inventory, any other collections you have and you just might have developed a skill that will make you more marketable!
