Is it an opinion or off the cuff remark? I would like to think the former, but highly doubt an explanation is forthcoming.

Something about it just doesn't look right. I would expect that kind of toning on a silver coin, not copper. There is a lot of yellow on it, which I've never seen on copper. Copper usually has blues, purples, and reds like these:

Just my opinion.I don't find it attractive. The yellows and greens turn me off.

Different compositions detecto...large cents are 100% copper.

There is absolutely nothing original about this coin. Anyone who believes that is natural toning has a lot to learn.

Rainbow coloring makes my mouth water too.
I started to question the cleaning method, but I do not have the training to comment. It is beautiful at the inner edges.

    The coin or the toning?

Don't know if you are saying that's a small amount or a lot. Either way, keep in mind a lot of copper collectors don't get their coins graded. Large cent collectors do keep census information independently of the TPGs, and they are much more reliable. If you want conditional census numbers for large cent then pick up a copy of Copper Quotes by Robinson.

Lance, I don't disagree with you, but I think an explanation to why the coin is AT would be more educational than a simple declaration. NT or AT, it is very pretty.

Those are proof coins, I have seen yellow and green on mint state copper coins before. Do you mean you have never seen those colors on a Large Cent?

And I would not buy any of the toners posted based off the pictures. The few I have seen in person (proof and business strikes) tend to be more muted and show the luster a lot better than the pictures. I personally think looking at a lot of these coins in hand people would not care if they were nt/at - they would still like the coin in person, maybe not buy it, but still like it in person. At times it is almost like the bigger the picture the brighter the toning becomes - versus the actual size of the coin. Just an opinion and no expert on any of the toning progressions or colors.

Detecto - search for The Penny Lady threads where she posts some of her coins. I think you will see more colors than you expect.
