I agree. The other amazing thing is that the 1900 year old coin has higher relief than the modern coin. It really did take almost 2000 years for us to approximate the artistry on these Roman coins. Btw I really like that left facing bust with the eagle reverse. It is a great coin.
I don't think it's any big deal. I mean, it's not as if the minters of the Vespasian were especially prescient. Now, if it had "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" on the reverse, then I'd be impressed.
The 1912 Liberty is backward. But, do you suppose the designers of our coins were aware of early designs. I think they were.
I think it's more the case that the designers of ancient coins tried to predict what our coins would look like. As the OP clearly shows, except for the UNITED STATES . . . part, they pretty much nailed it.
