I just sprung for one of those... YOUR fault! Naw, I have been expanding and capturing for my growing Carthage collection... could not resist snaring one.
My wife and I would go to either Wrightsville Beach (and go on up to Topsail), or Morehead City in the Outer Banks... we would go every other weekend. Miss it. Sometimes we would drive there just for the day (3hr drive each way). Enjoy your vacation. Wonderful part of the Country! SICILY: But this one is "Get back to Work!" with the PLOW reverse! That's a cool coin Alegandron! We love it around Surf City, it's a very peaceful area with plenty of things to do.
I don't have ancients many from islands, but here is a new picture of a medieval coin from Venice i just took, almost looks like it's moving Venice. Giovanni Soranzo, 1312-1328. AR Grosso
No one has yet posted a coin from Santorini (AKA Thera). I do not have one in my collection. I am a member of the ANS, and they have several including this stater. http://numismatics.org/collection/1957.172.1219?lang=en
I'll add my 11 mm .8 gram trihemiobol from the Island of Thasos....and enjoy your cool vacation!!! Fantastic posts everyone!!!!!
I used to use that as a desktop background. What a beautiful place! @TIF - wow. Just... wow. @stevex6 - more "wow". This Akragas piece I had is the only "Island" coin I can think of, offhand, since Akragas/Agrigento is on Sicily. Love the designs and all the activity going on with this coin, though there's a whole lot of scary predatory action happening! One day I hope to have another one of these, in higher grade. Sicily, Akragas: silver hemidrachm, ca. 410-406 BC Obverse: eagle right, clutching dead hare in its talons, barley grain behind. Reverse: Crab, with ketos below, swimming left with fish in its jaws. 16 mm, 1.8 g. SNG ANS 1012. Ex-Gitbud-Naumann, Germany, through VCoins store, 5/28/2014. Wikipedia pages: Akragas (Agrigentum, Agrigento) Ketos (cetus)
I like the non-coin photos posted here, too. Here is the island from which I happen to be typing this message (St. Simons Island, Georgia). Not my best snapshot, but the only one I had handy at the moment.
A current theory for why the Minoan civilization ended abruptly is a combination of events. The volcanic explosion at Thera(Santorini) would have caused massive tsunamis on all Aegean islands and Crete and led to decline. In their weakened state, an invasion by the Mycenaean's finished the job. Crete, Polyrhenion. Circa 330-280 BC. Æ 12mm. Obv: Round shield; in center, bull's head facing. Rev: POLY around spear point. SNG Copenhagen 534; BMC Crete pg. 68, 15-17.
Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura Anonymous AE Normal Plaque (c. BC 29 - AD 297) 38 mm x 19 mm x 5.05 grams Obverse: Goddess Lakshmi facing, being showered by two mini-elephants atop of poles. - No legend. Reverse: Clockwise revolving Swastika tree. Uncertain symbols. Snake(?) left, Bull right(?) Note: Extra Large for the type. Superb Condition.
I took this picture of pyrgos in santorini on great Friday, the city gets lanterns set on all the rooftops it looks like it's on fire from far away I would post some santorini related coins but I would just be posting our friend Clios coins
I like the idea of an animated Gif showing the way a coin wiggles in hand but I'd suggest slowing down the speed quite a bit to make it less frantic.
Just received this one. Thrace, Islands off. Thasos. 200-1 BC. Æ 20mm. Diademed & draped bust of Artemis right, bow & quiver over shoulder / QASIWN, nude Herakles standing right, drawing bow about to shoot an arrow, lionskin around neck.
