There is a very attractive coin exhibition of Islamic coins at the art museum of Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. For the duration of the exhibition, one small room is devoted to the collection. It is well lit and well-captioned. It has some Islamic gold, some Turkoman figural bronze, and a selection of other early Islamic coins. The museum's web site announcing it is here: https://willamette.edu/arts/hfma/exhibitions/library/2020-21/gold-of-the-caliphs.html If you know of attractive ancient-coin displays that are not at the obvious major museums, why not tell us in this thread?
I don't have pictures at the ready but The National Museum of Slovenia and the Museum of Stamps and Coins in Monaco both have excellent displays of ancient coins up through the Medieval and Renaissance eras. Their addresses are: Narodni muzej Slovenije Muzejska ulica 1, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia & Museum of Stamps and Coins 11 terrasses de Fontvieille, 98000, Monaco Both are well worth a visit and will hopefully be opening back up this summer if they haven't already done so. And the one in Monaco has seldom-encountered Monacan coins to the present day on display as well.
The Stanford art museum has a pretty good collection of ptolemaic tets and drachmas - definitely worth a look.
Hi All, There is a PDF Press Release describing the exhibit here: https://willamette.edu/arts/hfma/pdf/2021/gold-of-the-caliphs.pr.pdf - Broucheion
